Ok hopefully i can get some help from some members who have owned jet skis for awhile. I have had my 97 xp for 3 months now. usually when i put key in batt dont supply all the gauges until i hit the start button. Now when i put lanyard in my ski wont even start or crank over at all. When i take the lanyard out the gauges stay activated like i have they key on. Battery is fully charged and a new voltage regulator only 3 weeks old. I get one short beep followed by long beep when i try to start. Would greatly appreciate some help and feel very welcomed to this site as a new owner of a ski if i could get some help thanks!

XPfan2012 - welcome to the forum.

I checked in my operators manual for a a 1996 GTX, so your beeps may be different. it says about 2 short beeps , 1 long beep- which is wrong lanyard, bad connection, salt water in lanyard, improper operation of MPEM or defective wiring harness.
then 4 beeps or 8 beeps....
It says nothing about 1 short and 1 long beep.

Hopefully some one with your ski with add their advice to your problem.
Just wait a bit until others comment.

Where about in Bradenton are you? Brad (Rampage) works at Action Performance.

Well I did some more trouble shooting. I was thinking maybe bad solenoid or starter but jumped solenoid and it deff wants to start. I have always had to take lanyard on/off a few times to actually get my two beeps. Seems like i need a new dess key. But the contacts dont look worn out. Another note with the key..half the time I apply the key I dont get any gauges to come on until i hold the start button. Any insight on this issue? Oh and seadoobuddy Im from bradenton but am In VA due to being in the military.

Even with the lanyard off holding the start button will allowe the gauges to come on for a few seconds. This is a standard feature. If i am not mistaken I think the one short one long beep is that it does not recognize the lanyard. Given that it takes some time for the lanyard to work it could be the DESS post on the ski and not the lanyard that is going bad.

Quick question. I found a used dess post. That shouldnt need anything done to it right? Its just the key that is programmed to the mpem?
