My boat's starter relay (part number 278000513) has been replaced by 278002347. I just installed the 2347 on the starboard motor, works fine but the motor spins quicker than before (when starter is engaged). It does start instantaneously which is good. Now why would a newer model/improved starter relay cause that? To me it seems like the starboard starter spins at a higher RPM! Anyone else notice that?

If the contacts in the solenoid are going bad... they will have high resistance, and not all the power was getting to the starter. A new one gives the starter full power.

Sounds right, just got back from evening on lake and the SB motor started up the instant I hit the starter every time whereas the port motor took a few seconds to fire up. I had got used to slower response over the years! replacing the port solenoid tomorrow
