Starter Rebuild Kits.

Has anyone bought any oem style starter rebuild kits? I have a starter that I pulled apart & it could use new brushes as they are getting near the end of there life. The rest of the starter is in good shape. I chucked up the armature on the lathe & cleaned up the commutator so that looks like new, but would like to install new brushes if thats an option.

I saw this kit on ebay, but not sure of its quality. Any thoughts?

Yep... I've used them. Normally the import kits are fine.

Be careful with how much you cut off the com. If you make it thin... they can get hot, and you can pull a plate off. (in operation) I normally, I just polish the com a bit with sand paper.


I will say this... a rebuilt, 20 year old OEM starter will almost always be better than an aftermarket starter !!

Thanks Tony. I cut off just enough to get rid of the edges & polished it after. most of what I removed was where the brushes have not contacted, & then maybe just a fuzz more overall to clean it up. I wonder if these kits are something my Local dealer might have?
I'll try calling later. Are there better kits than others?

I have used that kit and the brushes wear pretty quick, I bought OEM brushes for my spare starter instead.

Just rebuilt mine a couple weeks ago. Pretty easy job. Make sure you contour the brushes prior to install. Makes a better connection.

Thanks, Local dealer had them in stock. Same part number on the brush holder, but the (+) brush side was 028099-6931. I have a feeling thats a denso number, & not a seadoo number. Same part though. It was $40.00 for both brushes. For the trouble it takes to replace them, I just decided to go with the oem stuff. Glad it was available!

Maybe thats true with some... I however didnt find that to be the case. My starter wouldnt reach full tq until mine were contoured. After contouring it turns over great.

i watched minnetonka4me rebuild the starter i bought from him, after he put it all back together, he ran it for a minute or two off a spare battery to wear in the brushes. the notches in the comm and the pressure from the brush springs will contour the brushes pretty quickly on their own.

i have bought replacement oem brushes from the dealer before, but that was some time around 1999, so i have no idea if they still carry them or not.
