Still working on the 98 challenger with the twin rotax. I finally got an ohm meter and started checking power. I get power to my ignition switches. I also get power to my coils, but not from the coil to the starter.(this is on both coils and starters) When i plug in the DESS it get two short beeps, and then hit the switch and nothing. my blower, bilge and lights all work. A few days ago when hooking the battery up with the DESS left connected my port engine started to crank any time i hooked up the ground. I thought that was odd, maybe a stuck solenoid??
Any insight would be awesome guys! thanks so much

Check the voltage at the solenoid when someone pushes the start button.

I had your identical problem and it was the solenoid (after the electrical box had flooded)

Check the power on the small connector. to check I placed an LED in there. I could see the LED light up when I pushed the start button...

New Solenoid fixed it.

I know its been awhile since ive been here, had some prorities come up and havent been able to work on it, well i replaced one of the solenoids, and got nothing new. it still does the same thing. i hit the ignition switch and get nothing, but i can jump my solenoid and the engine will crank. My ignition switch tests out good with my Ohm meter so i dont think thats the issue...

Sounds like the solinoid if you jump the posts and it starts. did you check all the fuses? The switches do run into the mpem. You can check if the switches are working with mpem by just pressing the starter buttons a few time without the key and you hear like an alarm go off.

Hmm I've never had any alarm type thing up off and I've hit those switches alot. I'll replace the other solenoid and see what I get there.

It does this on my 98 Sportster 1800 w/dual engines so I am assuming your 98' will do it also. If I press either start button 4 times without the key in it a get a beeping alarm. Usually just like a car if the solinoid/relay is bad you will just hear the clicking. All solinoid/relay work the same. You have checked all the fuses in the MPEM to make sure? Mine has an ignition fuse yours more than likey does also.

I'll check hit the button 4 times and check what it does. I have checke the fuses and they were all good. I'll check for my ignition fuse again thou. Thanks.

Did you also check your netural safty switch? those do go out and will get the boat from starting. It loacted in the shifter.

No I haven't, but I get the two beeps that says all is good to start... I though with a bad n/s switch it would indicate it was in gear.

Ok finally got a good day to try some stuff out. Solenoid still jumps and cranks the motor. Well i got my power probe out, and i can run along the ignition wire from the MPEM to the motor and anywhere on the ignition wire, i hit power and cranks, so its not the solenoid. However i hit power anywhere from the MPEM frontwards (between the ignition switched to the MPEM) and i get nothing. it shows proper ground, and proper power, but nothing. Almost like its just missing a link somewhere. Where exactly is my ignition fuse located on this? I have two fuse boxes on the MPEM the top one has three 5 amps on the left and a 7.5 i believe on the right. The bottom box has fuses in every slot. Am i missing fuses in the top block??
Thanks for all the help!! hope i can get this figured out. Im about to send it to a mechanic somewhere.

Well i just checked my wiring diagram and fuse locating on the service manual. The ignition fuse it in tact and good...so i dont know what it could be?? Bad MPEM?? i hope not. What would indicate that the MPEM is bad? I used to get two beeps when i would plug in my DESS but not for some reason i dont get anything when i plug it in. i can hear the MPEM make a click noise when it is plugged in thou.

I used to get two beeps, but after it sat a few months now it doesn't beep at all... What would keep it from beeping at all?

if it sat a couple months, the battery probably needs charged. If it don;t have enough power it won't beep or try to start

Does eveything else work? Like the blower, radio, lights, and that? There are tests for the MPEM you can do. The buzzer could of died also.
