Hey guys I'm trying to take the starter motor off my 951 rx di engine but it's stuck on there solid!

I've took the 2 bolts out holding it in place but all I'm getting is a slight wiggle!
I've just it a few light taps with a hammer but I don't want to go too hard with it!

Any ideas, is this normal, I think it must be jammed open on the fly wheel as it's not working.

Huge thanks for any advice :)

I'm not sure if your model has it, but from the factory on the back of the starter there is a round bracket with 2 nuts holding it onto back of starter then a hex head screw bolting bracket onto engine block. It is a starter support bracket. My 96 xp had one.

Mine just had I bracket with 2x 10mm bolts on it mate. I can't see anything else holding it on .

there is a bracket usually at the other end to support the starter. usually thats where the positive wire bolts on.

I leave the bracket bolted to starter with the nuts, then remove the hex cap screw that is screwed through bracket into engine block. The starter is basically sandwiched in between bracket and flywheel housing, so taking off those 2 nuts isn't going to accomplish a removal of starter unless you take off hex cap screw as well.

Thanks for the replies guys! ;)

Yeah mine dose not have that kind of Braket, it's held on with just two 10mm bolts.

My mate popped over and got it off by putting a flat head screw driver between the starter body and flywheel housing and giving it a wiggle!

Take alook at this! It's 100% gone! And after one season ! Aftermarket I think!

Is there some sort of clutch system on the fly wheel? Just there is some sort of gear in the hole where I took the starter motor out that I can spin with my finger but the engine dosnt move! :/

I think you left part of the start still attached to the motor. There should be two 13mm bolts that attach the starter to the flywheel housing. Did your starter come out in pieces?

Ha ha ha yeah that's just the inside magnets all messed up! Lol

The thing came out in one piece. :)

the 951 starters do not have the bendix attached to them, the bendix is inside of the magneto housing. the 951 starter just has a gear that spins the bendix gear to engage the flywheel.

That's the starter after I took it apart to find out what failed, turned out the magnets brine down and jammed the starter!

So is there some sort of clutch system in there then dude? :)

Thanks for the pm reply mate,I take it it's normal for it to spin freely then untill it's spinning at a certain rpm for the bendix to shoot out and engage the flywheel.

Ps your message inbox is full so couldn't reply via pm :)

the inertia of the starter kicking on pushes the bendix out along spiral grooves on a shaft, look up seadoo starter on youtube and you'll probably find a video of someone testing a starter. without a load on the starter the gear pops out, then goes back in once the starter spins up because there is no load on it to keep the gear pushed out. you have the same thing, its just separate from the starter motor on the 951.
