Starter issues

So I recently bought a 97 Spx that had been sitting for a good while, and was obviously used in saltwater unfortunately. Last night I got it to briefly fire on starter fluid, making me more willing to put money into it. The starter seems to be going out. With the plugs removed it turns over just pretty slowly and with them in it engages then stops once it builds compression. Battery is good, got 13 volts resting and it did just fine in my other SPX. Is there anything else that it could be? And as far as replacement goes from what I have read here the aftermarket ones are not the best? Would a rebuild kit be a better option?

I would clean the ground and hot wires first but yes when I my starter went bad it did the same thing. I’ve had luck with the sbt high torque starters. Been using them for years with no issues but a rebuild kit on the factory one would probably be the best bet if you know what you’re doing on it

Ok, so now I'm having another issue. I was messing around with the starter and it was kicking the starter over just fine. Well I left it overnight and came back this afternoon and everything is dead. The battery is fine but there is no signs of life, buzzer doesn't go off ( not sure I can trust that, they intermittently go in and out on both my SPXs), no turning over, nothing. I went through the fuses and they were all good. I was connecting and disconnecting the battery multiple times. Is it possible for the system to reset? Is there something I'm overlooking?
