Starter help!

1997 seadoo xp 787 starter question?
Should I be able to turn my starter by hand in both directions while it's out of the engine or is something wrong with it. The ones I've pulled out of my truck I know you can't do this to them. Or is this standard in a PWC.

The starter will turn either way. You need to test it while it is out. Ground the body and put 12volts to the lug sticking out of the side. should spin right up.

Right on, thanks a bunch. Already did a bench test on it and was getting ready to put it back in when I noticed that it would spin in both directions by hand. So I think I'm good to go. Thanks again!

Pay close attention when tightening the positive wire to the starter. It is easy to get overzealous and turn the stud along with the nut which can cause contact within the starter of the positive wire. Be gentle. Good Luck !
