Starter grinding and not engaging

Any idea of what I should look for? It was working fine until my daughter came drifting back saying it wouldn't start. It sound like it just doesn't engage into the flywheel. So I turn the drive shaft by hand and tried it again. Turns a little then grind and just does a free spin like it hit no teeth. Help, I've about has it with my doo's this season. Second one to go down. Oh ya it's 2000 rx 951 carb.

It has a separate Bendix/one way bearing/counter gear in the MAG housing. It's probably gone bad. Open the MAG cover, and take a look.

Should I yank the engine?
