Found a 96 SPI that looks VERY nice. I am trying to find another XP but haven't found one yet.

That is NOT a 720 motor, correct? I don't belive I've ridden anything smaller than the 720. I've had a 95 XP, 96 HX, 97 XP. I'm into jumping as much as possible, spinning around, falling off, etc

Will the SPI be any fun for me? Or would I be disappointed? Not sure how big of a difference that motor is.. any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

If it has round bumps on the head, it's a 580 with 55 or 60hp, lines cast in the head it's a 718 85hp in that year. I think the next year the sp had the 85hp 718.

Not very fast, and not much pop for jumping or tricks.

Yep... it's the small engine. It's fun... but not that arm-ripping power of the 800. (literally 2x the HP)

In 96... the SPx would have had the 720.

If you are looking for the 800 in an X4 hull. You need:

95 XP800
96 XP
97-99 SPx

The 800 was also available in the GSX. It was only a little bigger. Still a 2 seater.

The wife has the 95 SP 580 and I have the 97 SPX 787, her ski is fun but no where near as fun as mine, I am actually pretty impressed with the power of the 580, had way more balls than I thought it would, its plenty enough ski for her and she loves it, she refuses to ride mine, haha.

Agreed! The 580 is as much a legend as the 787 in my books! It pushes my giant GTS and three people upwards of 40mph! Did I mention it's a gas sipper? It literally burns half the fuel my 787 SPX burns. I've had two overheat incidents where hoses were melted. Engine rebounded without any damage. Pistons and cylinders are still perfect and compression is still at 150 on a 20yr old crank! I wil admint, the pistons, rings and c-rod bearings were replaced two years ago after a no-oil incident. No, not even the glorious 580 can survive without oil.

Tell me about it, spent about 1.5 hours of riding the sunday before last and went to fill up this past sunday, wifes took 1.8 gallons mine took 5!!! Hers still has the orig 580 in it UNTOUCHED, never had a bolt off it except for the carbs! 145 psi both jugs

 If you ever do have to work on it, you'll love the prices of the parts. Best part: NO RAVES!! Those things are like $200 to replace. I have 3 motors with Raves and it seems at least one among them is always leaking.

There is much to be said about smaller engine in general.

They seem to hold up better if for no other reason you can't generally go nuts with them. They do exactly what they were designed to do.

Run well enough to have fun but not so well you do stupid things with them as you know you can't,,,

Yea. I also think the 787 and 951 are cranking out REDICULOUS amounts of power for their size, weight and displacement. It must weigh only 25% more than the 580, yet puts out 100% more power. It's unreal that it has as much and sometimes more horsepower than some cars out there. Hell, my diesel Jetta only has 110hp. It redeems itself in the torque department however :)
