I've never heard of any diagnostic mode on the 98. It tells you what's goin on by the number of beeps when inserting the lanyard. The beeper is just a regular one. Under the bucket on drivers side easy to get to. Check the wires or replace. Check the wires on the DESS post also. Radio shack has them.
The MPEM has a sticker on the front it should start with 204....
Beeper first.

All those black wire connections where the beeper is are your grounds. Check all for corrosion and use dielectrict grease when reassembling.

IMAGE_156.jpgIMAGE_157.jpg just as a reminder you guys on the top row of fuse's on my mpem box only have power to the 5v fuse wich is the first to the left the other 2 5v i get no power and i have no power to the 3v farthes right wich is a 3v do guys know if a faulty dess stops or cuts off power to those three functions what doesnt work are= gauges supply 5v,engine control 5v, and bilge pump 3v, what am guessing is that these should be getting power even with lanyard on the dess right or wrong ??? anyone know

If your battery switch is on you should have power to everything. Everything on mine does. Power thru those fuses I do not know.

Out of curiosity.. Check both battery terminals, there are many small leads. Make sure all hooked up in case one broke off due to age, do also with the battery switch. If a wire broke off they are hard to spot.

I agree. There are several small wires that are connected on the battery switch. Make sure they are all good.

will do will check some how behind the battery switch wich looks hard to get to if there is any loose wire's will keep informed if this is the solution to my problem i will follow thru to hopefully help anybody else that runs into this problem sad to see that some one else like member (kyleohme) had same issue and yet did not come up with a direction to to go so i will follow thru unles he just gave up and sold his boat broke once again thanks to you guys and if its not my mpem i will have a beer on you guys name or if you ever in so cal your welcome for a ride on my speedster still have my fingers crossed that its not my mpem

You should be getting power to all your accessories, just look carefully for fallen wire. They will drop under the engine and you wont even notice. The battery switch is just 4 screws to remove and see the back.

Try getting ahold of All things Custom. He does know what he is doing and many people have used him successfully. He would be my goto person if I thought I had a MPEM issue.

just checked all wires behind battery all were good all i get is a click noise coming from mpem when inserting lanyard to dess am guessing im supposed to have power to those fuses even with out the lanyard insertid on dess correct and i cannont get a hold of all things custom guy does not response anyone have a way to get a hold if him

Have you cleaned the DESS contact and lanyard contact? Once in awhile I will get a click and no beep I just reinsert the lanyard again. Use a pencil eraser or I use a fine sand paper to scuff the contacts.

does your gauge light and bilge pump work with out inserting lanyard to your dess o and that fuel switch dont work either but i do have a full gas tank

Gotta cover all your bases. They all seem to have their own quirks when dealing with electrical. No accessories work?? No charger or blower?

i think my problem still resides in getting power to those 3 functions specially engine control 5v fuse that sucker has to be keeping me from sparking could some one see if theres has power to it with out lanyard on dess or does get power once lanyand is on the dess

thanks phildoo so that means am not having dess issues but some were else when your dess is dirty and clicks that doesnt mean its gonna cut of any functions like the ones am having issues with am thinking of disconnecting and removing to see if there is any warpage like your old one will do tommorrow

wow your last reply has me scratching my head know all functions working and bad mpem you mean your 5v module fuse good and your 5v engine management good yet you only had spark on one engine

Yea. One engine would start and run fine. The other wouldn't even turn over. When we jumped the solenoid to crank it over we got no spark but all accessories worked and no blown fuses. It really sounds like you lost power somewhere. Most mpems seem to get smoked from jumping or charging errors , not like yours which was on the water when it failed.

I know my 98 sportster does not have a battery switch so I ALWAYS dis-connect the battery before I charge it! Better to be safe then ruin the MPEM.. And your correct about the radio shack buzzer it works great.. Mine has been in a few years now...

no cure yet i dropped it off at power toys in pomona ca i went as far as can go and found no cure am now almost certain its my mpem but for $80.00 dollars flat rate diagnostic and how long its takes to find the problem felt like it was worth it they also said they would hook up there diagnostic tool for seadoo and see what codes it would give ill let you guys know what results they get
