i have owned two jet skis for about 4 years, a 95 hx and a 96 gsx. there was something that i noticed about the gsx that really had me scared (and which bothered me personally because every time i take them out i give them a good once over) the cable from the bracket on the on the carburetor that opens up the lever on the injection pump was not connected!! :puke: (and it looks like its been that way for awhile now) the previous owner did race the ski and it has some minor mods, flame arrestors, UMI steering, intake grate...after worrying about it and getting all fired up, i gave it some thought. i put about twice the amount of oil in my gsx's reservoir in one summer compared to my hx, so it has to be consuming the oil (knowing that the 787 is larger motor than a 717 it should use more oil, but not that much). i have also noticed sometimes the spark plugs are very dark, and when it runs at idle/low speeds the exhaust is a bit more smoky than at high speeds. i was just curious if the previous owner rigged the injection pump to supply maximum amount of oil at all times, to benefit his racing?

That cable linked from the throttle to the oil pump varies the amount of oil supplied as you open the throttle. Obviously it would use less at idle and more at full throttle. If you're getting too much oil then the pump is probably stuck at the last position when the cable broke. You've probably been safe running it because the oil pump valve is stuck open. Could have been more serious if the cable broke while the pump was stuck closed. I would either replace the cable and check the adjustment and operation of the oil pump or just bypass the oil injection/ block off and premix your gas and oil.
