Some advice for a new guy on 01'......

Hi everyone, i'm new to the forum, i'll post in the meet and greet section in a bit. I grew up on the lake but have no experience with PWC's.

I'm going to go look at a 2001 Seadoo that i can get for $400 with a newer trailer. I know the ppl who own it, and its sat for about 4 years or so with a bad engine. I have yet to go look at it yet but i know that it's a 2 seater and its a 2001. I did a lil quick research and i'm assuming that it's a 951 RX or RX DI? Maybe you guys can correct me if i'm wrong. Its supposed to be in great cosmetic shape and the trailer is supposed to be like new.

My questions are:

Is $400 a decent price for a ski that needs an engine?

What is the difference between a RX and a RX DI?

How hard is a motor swap, i would buy a new complete motor.


Any advice or information would be great, this forum looks like the place to be for seadoo info!

I'm definitely not a professional, but i have a great deal of knowledge about 2 strokes, and I am a competent mechanic. I raced dirtbikes for years and i'm very familiar with rebuilding both bottom and top-ends in 2 strokes.

I havent done any work on a ski, im only familiar with my boat, but that is a great price. You can sell just a few parts and easily make that. The trailer alone is worth over $400. You wont lose any money here.

Sounds like a great project. If you drop a new motor in it, you got a nice ski with a brand new motor under warranty for a total investment of around $2500.

Well i dont know much about seadoo's yet, but i would hope to have it running for much less than 2500 invested. I only checked one site but they had a brand new 951 for 1200 bucks. I know that theres alot of other small items i would need that could add to the price. But i was hoping for around $1800 invested when finished.

Im not sure which motor you need, but the DI is like 400 to 500 more.

It's red and black. Yeah i dont know if its a DI or not. Whats the difference between the 2?

From what I can find looking up the models, a red/black color combo in 01 is a GTX. But that is a 3 seater. The RX DI was blue/white and the RX was black/yellow.

I could be wrong on the year, i am going to go try and look at it this week. I know its red and black, and i know it doesnt have reverse. If that makes a difference

Check it out and see what you can come up with. doesnt sound like it is DI, so a new engine is like $400 cheaper. :cheers:

Went and looked at it today. It's a 99 GSX Limited with a 951 Carb motor in it. Nice trailer that is like new, hull is in good shape, real clean.

Now to the motor....

The motor and drive are out of the ski. When I asked where all the parts were, they put me in a truck, drove me across a pasture to a treeline, where the block, jet drive, cylinder, exhaust, carbs, and nuts and bolts were in a junk pile grown up in weeds.

I guess I'm just kinda looking for some opinions on if I should even try to attempt to put this ski back together. It looked like most of everything was there, but I'm afraid a missing bracket here, and a missing linkage there, after ordering from seadoo would make this project a costly attempt. Not to mention I didnt remove the engine so going back with it would be even harder yet. I havent ruled it out completely but I'd like some input from you guys that have probably been down this road before. I'll offer them about $250 for everything if I decide to buy it.
