Did you let anyone know what/where you were going? I would think after 3-4 hrs after dark some one would call the CG....did anyone?????

Fix the gauge and keep your reserve tank line going!!!!

I ride Lake Michigan and found that carrying a cell phone is a necessity... I rolled it over one day, took on a bunch of water and realized that freezer bags are not waterproof... Went to Sam Walton's and picked up a waterproof box and it fits perfectly in the front small compartment with room for the phone and a handheld marine radio. Might be able to fit a flare in there as well. Good thing you made it back to ride again and that you got a good group of the lighthearted CG.

Glad that you shared your story also. Made me rethink safety gear that you hope you don't need, but if you do, you got it.
 
I will say, aren't you required some boating training on a pwc up there? If so, they'd have taught you to file a float plan with someone that knows where you're going and how long you should be. When you get back you check in with them, if you don't call and they can't get hold of you, they call for rescue with the info you gave about where you'd be.

What was the water temp? Honestly you're very lucky that the cg found you when they did or you might still be floating out there. What was the water temp? People end up being treated for hypothermia after a few hours in the gulf with 75 degree water, I'm sure Huron was no where near that warm.
 
Huron is no where near that warm. Try 60 - 65f surface temp if your lucky. Its much colder beneath that surface temp.

yeah that's my point, if there was an issue like losing the carbon seal and swamping the ski, he'd have had to stay in the water, and would have been hypothermic in only a few hours and in real trouble once the sun went down. with 4-5' waves, it would be really difficult to spot a single ski floating on the surface, much less a swamped ski and a guy in the water next to it, even if they're looking for you.

not to beat a dead horse, but yeah, a cellphone in a waterproof case and/or a trustworthy friend that knows where you're going and when you should be back, can save a lot of hours sitting on the water waiting for rescue.

obviously the OP has learned now what not to do without having any real serious consequences, and we should all learn from this as well.
 
Hey, I am brand new to this forum and this is my first post. I was about to post my stranded on the water story when I read yours. I spent twelve years in the Coast Guard (Semper Paratus) and picked up a lot of people out of the water that ended it up a lot worse shape then you becuase they did not have simple safety equipment. Here in NY it is illegal to go out on a PWC without it. Here the Coast Guard after picking you up would haev given you a ticket that made your wallet a lot lighter. My recommendation for your emergency kit is a Marine Fire extinguisher, at least three visual distress signal flares, a sound producing device and if you are not going fix the bypass extra fuel. Just trying to help. Just so you know I am not trying to be a smart**s and you can laugh at me too. I got stranded because of mechanical failure and since it was the middle of the day and I am a great swimmer I tied my mooring line around my waist and towed my 1996 GTX 3 miles back to shore. I don't recommend doing that I am still sore a week later.
 
alright well now i have all the safety equipment after being STOPPED yesterday by the CG out in tawas...my dad and i were both on my ski's and we had all but the sound producing device..they didnt give us a ticket just gave us a whistle and let us go....now we are all set and all the things on the ski are fixed including the fuel selector.....Now that the story has got out there for everyone to see lets end the thread here so its not always at the top of the list....Hope we can all learn something by this i know i did......thanks for all the support guys

just curious, when they stopped u, did they check registration too? cause a lot of skiis around here are being sold without titles
 
yes they did i was ok enev though the reg. was not in myname but it was good till 13 so they let me go....
 
Glad to see that your dad is able to get out on the skis.
I assume both of you are recovered from the surgery.

Reg is still in PO name????
 
yeah reg is still in po's name ...but not for long gonna do that today .....the guy was like 80 years old so i dont think ill have an issue wit him stalin it back LOL
 
Yes in MO even if the Year stickers good you still have to purchase another when you title it, That must be some extra income!
 
In texas you get a registration card to go along with the title that has to be on board at all times along with the whistle and fire extinguisher. There is also a penalty if you don't transfer title to your name within 14 days of purchasing a vessel. You only have to pay for the sticker though unless it's expired or close to it.
 
i transfered the title the same day but didnt want to do the REG. until i decided that i was going to keep in and go ahead with the new engine
