Ski rope tangle

I wasn't watching the rope as close as I should and got it tangled up on the impeller and shaft. I got it free, but apparently broke the plastic shaft protector in several pieces. Is this protector important? Can it wait to be fixed at the end of the season? Is it tough to replace? I got a quote from a local mechanic said it would cost $300...saw that the part is like $5.

If you are talking about the plastic cone that covers the rubber boot, then no, it is not hard to replace.

It will take about an hour, at most. If you are even remotely mechanically inclined, you can do it.

Not sure if you should drive on it. But mine doesn't have it. I am using an aftermarket impeller and SkatTrak told me that mine doesn't need it. So you "might" be able to get away with riding it, but why risk it?

Yes you can use the boat with out it but it might cause capitation depending on the condition is in. You should cut it out and take it out completely. Well not completely. The side that goes in to the hull you should leave, as it acts as a seal. Just cut around it.

To fix that problem you’ll have to take the pump out. That’s why mechanic is charging that much. Wait until you need the ware ring replaced and then do it at the same time just don’t run over any more ropes.
:)

Thanks for all the help!! It broke off right at the point where where it enters the hull... outside the hull it shattered apart and is gone. Do you think it will cause the boat to leak?

Oh, on the hull end? I thought the issue was the cone at the impeller end.

My misunderstanding. Sorry...

Yeah, it broke off from the impeller end up to where it goes into the hull...a little bit of it is still sticking out of the hull.

If you are careful enough to not suck up another rope, you are better off without that part.

No, it won't cause the boat to leak. The carbon seal is what's keeping the water out. I ran my boat for a year with them totally missing.
It might take a few MPH off the top speed, but you'll be OK

Thanks for all the info!! I put it back in the water last night and ran it around for a while...ran perfect...couldn't tell it was gone. I will definately watch the rope a lot more carefully now. Thanks again everyone!
