Ski refuses to run well

I bought this ski a few months back, I have never been able to take it out and run well for more than 30 min. Something always goes wrong.
I have replaced the fuel lines, cleaned the fuel tank, replaced the fuel selector valve, replaced the plugs, rebuilt the carbs, replaced the plug wire caps, and cleaned the filter and filter bowl. When I start it on the trailer it starts right up, idles great, and revs to the moon. When I put it in the water it starts right up, idles great, but when I hit the throttle it bogs down. And ideas?!!!
 
No I haven't. I didn't think that would be the case since after I first rebuilt the carbs and changed out the fuel lines it ran great for about 20 min before it started to bog down again. If it was compression wouldn't it always be under powered?
 
Its fuel system related, like maybe separtor cap cracked, LSA, pulse to fuel pump.
I advise you look at the injection pump alignment marks, pisser temp. (not scalding)
 
Bill, I will check those out. Is there any way it could be rev limiter related? If so how could I check that?
 
Compression

Your compression is kinda low, should be 150 and not less than 130, but shouldn't be causing the problem you are having.

I had a similar problem with a 95 I bought last year.. After going through the entire fuel system it still would not run well.. I took the fuel pickup out of the tank and cut out the screen on the bottom, problem fixed! It looked clean,but would not let enough fuel to flow it to the tube..
 
Your gauge might be a POS, or not. I advise borrow a known good one. When compression is as low as you described, its impossable for the engine to have any performance as the fuel mixture will not combust completely. Time for a new TOP.
 
The gauge being a POS is a definate possibility, it's kida old and probably never been calibrated (hand-me-down). Ok here is a little update. Today I was trying to start it and pulled the fuel line off the carb to make sure fuel was flowing through it. As soon as I did that it kicked over and started, but all the fuel was pouring out of the carb inlet nipple so it died pretty quick. I put the line back on and got nothing. I double checked the fuel system and noticed the vent was leaking a little. I pulled the fuel vent checkvalve off and blew it out. That seemed to fix it. I hooked everything back up and got it to start again on the trailer, it sputtered a little but then with a few quick revs seemed to clear out the problem. It idled great and reved quick. I shut it off and started it up a few times to make sure it would start and stay running. I went to the ramp and backed it in the water; didn't want to start. I featherd the throttle a little and got it to start. Once it was started it idled good. I turned it around and idled away from the ramp, hit the throttle and...... nothing... seems like it is loading up or something. The thing will not accelerated past a idle speed. It's almost like its under too much of a load (I only weigh 180 so no wise cracks) I featherd the thorttle, tried WOT, and anything in between. I put it back on the trailer and pulled out of the water. Started it up on the trailer and it kicked right over and reved w/ no problem. I have come to the conclusion that my jet ski hates the water!!!!

Good to know. I think that might be next on the list. Did you put an in-line filter on instead?

I know you don't want to go back to square one, but it sounds like the ski is starving for fuel. From the symptoms you describe it sounds like the carb filters are clogged. It doesn't take as much fuel to run on the trailer as it does in the water.

Lou. I checked them before I put it all back together today, they were clean. I thought the same thing, that maybe the carbs were gummed up again (even though all the lines are new). The carbs were perfect, no dirt, residue, or anything. Something that has me baffeled, the thing ran great for about 30 min when I first got it, as soon as I had problems I went straight for the carbs. The pop off pressure was no kidding about 5-8 psi and it had very weak springs in it. I replaced the springs with the ones that came in the rebuild kit and got the pop-off pressure to be 50. Shouldn't those weak springs and that low pressure kept it from running well at all?
