should I ditch my choke for a primer

A primer just seems alot easier for getting gas to the carb. Are there any major drawback to doing this switch?

This is my normal stance.....

If you break your choke cable, or have some other choke related issue... then install a primmer kit.

Primers are good, and they let the carbs get a little more air to flow... in turn, your engine will make a little more power. BUT, in something like my boat... (pic in my avatar) the hoses will be so long, that it would take 12 to 15 pumps to get fuel to the engine. Also, as the engine is running, it will suck the extra fuel out of the hoses. So... if you have a plug fouling issue, it could make it worse.

FYI... right now, I have 4 water toys, and only my 1990 Si has a primmer. (because I did a carb swap, and the choke was already removed)

I agree with Honda, I wouldn't do it in the boat, but did it in my XP. Works better than a choke, in my opinion. But in a boat it would be a major feat of hose routing.

thanks guys. i'm only looking at about 2-3 feet of hose so should be ok. prob do it for my next project.

do the primer kits come with instructions? just want to make sure I attach in the right spots

Some do, and some don't.

It's not hard though. Hook it up to the main fuel after the filter. Remove the choke cable, shaft(s) and butterflies from the carb(s). glue the nozzle and plugs in the the old shaft holes. (I like JB Weld) Mount the primer where your old choke lever was... and run the hose. Done.

One thing... don't drop a screw down the carb, or your 20 minute install will turn into a 4 hour long engine disassembly project. I like to remove the carbs... but you can stuff papertowls into the carbs, so if anything drops into them... it won't go far.
