Finally got to use the 1994 speedster last weekend, what a blast! Not to comfortable trying some of the tricks I see on the vids yet, but hopefully soon. Anyways, after putting in new batteries, it was still a rough start. I had to put gas in the spark plug chambers, and arc the plug wires to get a hotter arc to the plug, after that it started better, obviosly I got some old gas in there, but I need to change the plugs.....but I forgot to pull the old ones! Anybody know the plug # for replacement? Also, I noticed when I start to throttle it up, the front goes up for a bit until it finally planes out, but so much so that I cant see in front of the bow until it does, is that normal? I got about 47mph out of her, how fast should she go? Any other tips and techniques are appreciated. Thanks, Shawn

Arc the what ?

Not sure what that means but i wouldnt do it - your electronics module is at risk and they are difficult and expensive to fix. Your Speedster should start in 1-2 revs when hot and 6-7 when cold with chokes. Always use the choke when first start of day.

There is a battery boost switch on the dash to aid starting, maybe thats what you meant by arc.

Plug is BR8ES and you must re-gap them they are gapped 1mm from factory correct gap is .5mm, Sears sells a little feeler gauge and gapper tool.
Always carry spare plugs.

47mph is a little slow. GPS top speed should be about 50, with the speedometer reading 53 at 7000 rpm that is on no-wind and flat water conditions no bimini top and 1 driver only.

Use 89 octane whenever possible and only Sea Doo oil no substitute. DOnt mix synthetic with regular oil.

Yes the bow blocking your view is normal. Its a tail-dragger aircraft like a Piper Cub.

Tricks - you cannot flip a Speedster over even in rough water - however you can easily eject yourself and passengers out of the boat if you smack a wave wrong. If the lanyard is not attached to you, the boat will then motor off into the sunset without you. 27 gallons goes a long way.

best trick in a Speedster is find a big fast boat and ride the top of its wake.
Exit the wake in the middle not off the side (see eject passengers above)

Never beach a Speedster, wakes will pound the reverse gates into trash. Sand on startup will ruin the impellers.

Docking and trailering - leave engines at idle, use the shift lever to move-stop

Fuel.......

Manual calls for 87 octane rating in the U.S. and the oil used is suppose to be a non-NMMA, non TCW-3 low ash oil. I like the Seadoo blend myself, but the nearest Seadoo shop is 2 hours away.

The manual also states that if the XP-X oil is un-available, that oil fitting the above requirements is suitable.

I personally have been using the Quick-Silver brand of "full synthetic" oil in my 97 model 787 for a couple seasons now. It has an endorsement from Seadoo on the back of the bottle. I buy it by the gallon.

Use of a higher octane fuel will cause the engine to burn hotter. I do not recommend this. Some think the higher the octane, the better it is for your engine. This has been researched and is not correct. Please, use what the manual calls for. Sometimes, more or bigger, is not better.

Sounds like your boat is running pretty well man!! I dig it all except for having to pre soak your combustion chambers and arcing your wires! Hopefully, after you run it for a while that won't need to be done anymore. Safety first, after all. Love the comments above about the safety lanyard too... would hate to see my boat drive off into the sunset without me on it!! When you get a chance, take a pic of your boat and post it as your avatar!!

Jeez, can you imagine. After waiving your arms in the air for a half hour another boat finally comes and picks you up.

First question is "What happened?"
Second question is "Where's your boat?"

This will immediately be followed by tear producing laughter. :rofl:

You would then get to repeat this series of questions with your wife, friends, co-workers and insurance company.

I think I'm going to start wearing that lanyard! :cheers:

After I arced it and filled the chambers, I did not need to do it again. I did find the right plugs at Cabelas of all places, so I will be replacing them asap....plus I think the gas may have just gotten a bit old since I was unable to use it for about 10 months! I am totally new to these things and I can say I sure felt like I was gonna roll the sob! Have'nt quite got the courage up yet to throw a 360 at speed yet, and dont even mention "subbing" yet! If I did get tossed w/o the lanyard on, I would be swimming it because we have the only boats on the lake as of right now because it is a fairly new develpoment and everyone else has canoes or kayaks.....yep, most of them hate us for being the first ones to ever put a motor in the virgin waters, but thats the way it goes. Still getting used to the whole turning with the throttles thing instead of the wheel, but it will come in time......if the neighbors dont drill holes in my hull!
