HI, I have a bunch of extra parts lying around, 2 587 motors, exhaust manifolds and part of the short block assembly, anyone know how to find out what kind of metals these are? I was thinking of scrapping them if they are something semi valuable like aluminum. Thanks!

Its all cast aluminum. 587 parts are prob worth more in scrap these days.

The only parts that are worth anything are the RV valve, and the exhaust manifold if its the right one. They made two.

You have to pull all the studs out and get rid of the pulse nipple to get it to clean metal.

Okay, the exhaust manifold is also aluminum? I have a couple any idea which one is the one worth trying to sell? One motor I have is missing some parts and the other is locked up so probably worth scraping? Thanks. Any idea on the material of a crankshaft? I have one lying around and it seems very heavy, was hoping it is also aluminum?

No, crank is steel, and you have steel liners in the cylinders which is called "breakage" in the scrap industry which is worth less then half of clean aluminum.

Motors are tough when they are all rusted solid. If you cant get the cyl up a bit to cut the rods off, its prob not worth the headache.

I’d suggest you take them to a scrap yard – maybe they can help identify what metals they are. And then find out the prices for them from a few scrap yards. I had a lot of scrap which I recycled at a SIMS facility for metal management in Cortland Illinois. They purchase most ferrous and non-ferrous metal scrap; so find out from them if you can trade in your motors and manifolds. Here’s where you can get their details - http://us.simsmm.com/Locations/Illinois/Cortland.
