good evening all,

Im having my boat mechanic (of 3 months) do some maintenance etc and inspection on the boat while its in the warmth of his boat garage.

He calls me today and says he's done some pulling apart, and based on last time in water performance 3 weeks ago, check on a couple of items I mentioned to him
- sluggish in water at full throttle start off. got it up to high rpm and it wouldn't go past 20mph. turned it around and got it out of the water.

he said that I need about $1300.00 in parts to get it up to excellent condition.
- said the rave valves on starbord are both shot ( it started on trailer no problem 4 hours after i pulled it out of the water). said the "peices" all went out the exhaust and no damage to pistons or engines.
- then a bunch of small stuff as pevious owner put non-stainless nuts and bolts in place of stainless ones during various times of "maintenance"
- didn't mention anything major other than the rave valve as major part replacement, so I asked for a parts list. He said he would only get parts from seadoo dealer as they are guaranteed and it works best as a part replacement.
-Tried to talk his way around getting me a parts list. He also said I was lucky as the rave valve could have gone into engine and it would have cost me $3000.00 to replace one engine?

Need your help here guys and girls.
am I being shafted? I want to trust him, he's been honest with me so far.... but $1300.00 bucks!! for what??
I asked him not to order parts until I get parts sourced other places.

So, rave valves? what's going rate online or other for new guaranteed?
Stainless parts- nuts and bolts etc.
Actually, where can I get seadoo engine parts guaranteed that you have purchased from and trust? that makes it simpler.

thanks

Riva Motorsports, click PARTS at the top of this page. They have all OEM parts, except performance parts.

You need a parts list and a complete description of what he is intending to do. RAVE valves can break, see this thread http://www.seadooforum.com/showthread.php?12339-Causes-of-a-broken-RAVE-valve but they are not very expensive parts and on the 787 and 951 pretty easy to replace as they are right on top of the engine, not sure which engine you have, but the 951's run about 150 each for the whole RAVE assembly. If you only need the valve itself, they are about 60 each.

I got lucky and found a good mechanic in San Antonio, TX... he is rebuilding my engine right now. For a whole engine rebuild including crankshaft, pistons, sleeves, gaskets, rings, bearings, etc, the bill was for 1300 in parts....so yeah...you are paying way too much for a set of RAVE valves and some stainless screws.

So, in other words, the engine could still run with a broken rave valve and cause further damage? if so for how long? I know both engines started on the trailer a few hours after last water run while we cleaned the engine compartment etc. Started and ran for about 30 seconds with no issues, just the normal 787 rattle.

I haven't seen the boat since dropping it off the last time we had it out 3 weeks ago. I'm going to "drop in" on Monday and inspect it myself... I'm beginning to think he hasn't even taken it apart. Should be interesting.

Keep me posted on your thoughts.

The price of nuts and bolts have gone up I see. I guess you can ask him how much are the parts and how much he wants for labor. I know here in Chicago area the hourly rate is pretty high to work on Power Sports. The best price I found between the dealers is DGY Motorsports at $80 an hour. I usuallyt only use the dealer for my motorcycle for swaping springs and tires since the tools to do myself would be to much for the use I would get out of it. I guess find out how many hours the dealer charges for rave vales. Usually you can call and ask them and they will give you a ball park price since they are comon to do. I am sure there is an hourly book for PWC for repair. Hell for that $1300 there are places that will give you a whole engine with 2-3 year warranty and get money back.
