Hi all I have a 1999 Seadoo GTX Ltd
the problem I have is when it starts it starts then shuts down ( within seconds ) you have to disconnect the mpem then connect it back up again and it will do the same this is a replacement mpem that came with the ski ?
I am trying to get the LANYARD KEY for the original mpem to see if it has the same problem
Any help please
Thanks mark

Lanyard?

When you first plug the lanyard up to the post, you get two beeps, correct? When it dies, can you take the lanyard off and put it back on and get the two beeps again?

couple things...

These mpems have a delay timer in them, meant to shut down if you connect the lanyard and don't start, to keep you from running the battery down. They are set to shut off after 33 seconds. You could have a problem there.

When you connect the lanyard, the mpem beeps. If the post is going bad, it will do what you are experiencing. But, if you pull the cap off and put it back on several times, it will usually give you the two beeps again.

Without the lanyard on, push the start/stop button 5 times. When you do, you will hear a long and short beep. Put the lanyard on, you should hear another set of beeps. Count them and get back. If you do not get more beeps, then the advanced test is saying all is o.k..........

Let me know...

Shoot me a PM tomorrow and let me know you've posted. I'm curious.

What kind of condition is the ski in? Was it ridin in salt water frequently?

With the exception that you have to plug and un-plug the mpem everytime to get your beeps, it sounds like it could be fuel or spark. But, if it's shutting down, no beeps, then you have to un-plug and re-plug, sounds like electrical.

In your first post, it seems your saying you have another MPEM, but no lanyard for it. If you continue to have this problem, seems it might be a good idea to get a key programmed for it and try it. That is, if it's good.

Hi I did the advanced test and it is saying all is o.k.?
When you wind it over it will start straight up then die then you will not get a single thing from mpem till you disconnect and reconnect it??
Would it be something like over charging as it only seem to be like it when it starts
The spare mpem is the one that came of it at the start the person who had it before me jump started the ski and that when all the problem started got a replacement mpem of eBay but still got the problem
The ski is used on salt water all the time but is very clean never been sunk
Thanks mark

Hi I have removed the 15 amp fuse from the mpem and it now starts and runs yippee?
So would that be a fault with the charging or would it be with mpem still ??

Mag or rectifier?

You hit the nail on the head. Yep, the 15 amp fuse removed is allowing you to run your ski on the battery, isolating the charging circuit.

Your going to have a problem like a bad rectifier, bad wires or something in your stator/magneto (grounding it out).

I'd recommend checking your wire harness from the magneto plug, all the way into the mpem to see if you can find a bad wire. It might also be the rectifier.

The rectifier/regulator of the 951cc is integrated into the mpem. If the previous owner changed out the mpem due to this same problem, then it may be the stator. Normally, you would use a 6 pin magneto harness to test continuity between your yellow wires of the 3 phase circuit. The 3 yellow wires leading out of the magneto, tested between each other, should have a resistance of about .1 to 1.0 ohms. Without it, you got to take the cover off to see which wires are which. Then, you would also test from each yellow wire to ground. It should be infinite.

Check back in a while too, there are several mechanics hanging around the forum now who might have more input for you
