Screeching Sound

While on the water I could hear a squealing sound intermittently. When I took it out of the water and put on the hose to rinse the salt water out, it would make a ridiculously loud screeching noise when I revved it up. Is this a bad pump bearing?

Could the carbon seal do that? Is the sound coming from the pump or somewhere else when you run it on the hose?

I couldn't tell really. It was really faint when the ski was in the water (to the point it sounded like a faint beep of an alarm every now and then), but when I ran it on the hose, it was so loud that it scared me and I shut it down immediately.

It was coming from the rear of the ski for sure and didn't sound muffled by the seats that were still on and was apparently very muffled while in the water. I have however been doing a lot of cranking on it without the hose on while trying to get it started over the past couple days. So, I very well could have stressed that carbon seal too much.

Could it make that kind of awful noise and not completely fail?

I would go with plan "A", remove the pump, you're gonna have to take it off even if it's the carbon seal. I'm betting it's a bearing in the pump. When was the pump last serviced, and when you serviced it did you do a pressure test, 10psi for 10 mins.?

Is there lube in the jet pump hub or full of water? The impeller shaft bearings might be toasted if all the lube leaked out. I'm thinking the squeal is the jet pump of course, fire it up after removing the pump and drive shaft if the pump seems fine, if it still squeals with drive shaft out then it's not a noisy pump.

I'm guessing this is my problem. Why would the oil leak out? I put lower unit gear oil in it. What all do you guys think needs replaced?

Yup there is your problem. Looks like you need to rebuild your pump with new bearings and possibly a new shaft. Or buy a good used one, Minnetonka4me probably has one

Is the lower unit gear oil the correct lube for the pump? Also...How do I prevent this from happening again? I don't have any idea why it leaked out in the first place.

The pump lube is 75w 90 GL5 synthetic, I use Mobile 1. The usual place to leak is the "O" ring on the pump cone, however I have also had them leak at the double lip seal on the impeller end. Looking at your picture I would suggest a full rebuild, new bearings, seals, and a new impeller shaft. I believe Nick Minnetonka4me should have the parts. Also after you rebuild, in fact every time you do an oil change do a pressure test, 10 psi for 10 mins., it's in the manual.

I have my own story from last season lol. First of all, doesn't matter what lube is in there if the lube leaks out, there wont' be any. Before filling with oil air pressure leak check through the fill plug, no more than 10~12psi air for about 10 minutes if your pressure gauge doesn't drop it's ready to fill with oil. If I recall, that was a 1/8" pipe thread and I assembled a small manifold using a "T" for that b/c I forgot my dang leak check pumps at the shop, ugh..

I use the mercruiser high performance gear lube in mine, it goes in everything around here unless something unusual is specified. I think you'd be okay even with automotive gear lube but it's not a "marine grade". GL5 is claimed by some to cause damage to bronze synchro rings in manual transmissions, can't say I've had that problem yet myself.

Okay, my story: Last year I had a devil of a time with sealing the fill plug on mine the first go around, the fill plug was constantly wet with oil so I knew something was up. Sure enough, there was light milkshake inside and good thing I checked it in time. To my surprise the Permatex 2B(my everyday go-to sealer!) I'd used didn't do the job this time, not sure what happened. 2nd attempt I used some Rectorseal No. 5 joint compound I had on hand and that didn't leak

So anyway, the service manual suggests using loctite 592

Pull The pump apart and see if the housing suffered any damage. I can see in the picture the shaft will need replacing.

I do have a cone and a shaft...I dont carry pump bearings and seals b/c usually when bearings go bad they arent rebuildable.

I do have entire pump setups too.

In an extreme case, if the pump had seized, it could cause a bent crank, but more likely could cause a bent drive shaft or stripped splines or both. From the looks of your picture the pump wasn't far from seizing.

Here's some pics of the pump apart. Thoughts?

The bearing actually still spins in there.

I also had this shaft laying around that I intend to use to rebuild the pump.

I've seen worse, it's hard to tell from the pictures, the third picture looks like part of the bearing race is still in the pump and the rear bearing hasn't been removed at all. Remove those parts and clean up the pump and re-post the pictures.
