rxt/rxp instrument cluster

I am looking at buying a 06 rxt, guy said he replaced the instrument cluster because it was cracked and has no record because his seadoo friend did it off the clock.. but he has the old one. I asked him if it reset the hours to 0 and he said yes, but claims only 43 hours on the machine. Does the cluster hold the hours or does the ECU? I know on my suzuki gsxr the cluster does because i needed that replaced. If the cluster holds hours, is there any way to power one up out of the ski? I was reading you need a dealer computer to make the cluster work and its not as simple as popping one out and the other in? Any advice?
