I just got my 98 xp running on the trailor. I cleaned the carbs and it doesn't have grey fuel lines, and has new spark plugs. It revved up but felt like it had to build up rpm, soon as I started it in water I noticed it wasn't right. it kept dying, when I could get it to move it wouldn't rev over 3500 rpm. I could hear I noise like it was missing then would backfire some.

I'd appreciate any help.

Im not positive but it sounds like your carbs need to be adjusted, I was having the same problem after I had my carbs rebuilt.

How would I know what to adjust and how to set it. This is my first pwc. Its like when I put it under a load it just dies out.

make sure LSA set to 1.25, and HSA at mag 0, pto 1/4. Adjust idle so its at 3000rpm on trailer.

Ok ill try that tomorrow. Could any kinda leak cause that. After about ten minutes of trying to make it go I turned it off and opened up the hood and pulled out the tray thing. Smoke started coming out.

Smoke out of the hull? That's an exhaust leak.

Anyway... what you are describing is excessively low compression. It may be time for a rebuild... but... before we condemn your engine... check the compression.

Look at the rave valves and water regulator, those have a big effect on high rpms, put the air box back on when ride testing so you do not leanout - never go without the flame screen.

Well the mag side read 120 psi but the pto side didn't even move the needle. I could feel it pushing out a little air when I took the gauge off. What could do this.

Shine a light down that *hole and hand rotate the pto to bring piston up to top. Hole
in piston? Remove rave to view piston side condition. Time for a R&R or re-build.

There's your answer. The engine is done... and it's time for a rebuild.

You want 140psi or better.

Also... the engine didn't seize, so the jug that isn't making any pressure would still push air since the piston is moving in the cylinder.

R&R is Remove and replace. (or rebuild)

I have a hole in the piston. What can cause this

That ain't good.

Where's the hole? If it's on top, in the center of the piston... it's from pre-ignition. (bad fuel, or high timing) If it's the crown... that's from getting hot, and/or running lean.

Sorry to hear it, but at least you know where the problem is.

The hole is perpendicular to the pin and its right under the rings. I want to just find a cheap used piston and rings and run it until i get the money to do a whole rebuild.

Trouble is you need to remove the engine and flush/flip the crankcase to insure all the piston particles are no longer in the rotating compartment - damage may already be done but finding a piston that matches your bore will be the first obstacle, hunt your local marina for ideas on used stuff, me thinks you will be looking to someone like full bore for top end service or sbt for the whole thing.

95 xp bogs

My 95 xp runs well with a full tank of gas, however once I burn a 1/4 of a tank it will bog and surge a 4000 rpm. If I fill the tank up, It is very hard to start, but once running it runs fine at all rpms but one I burn a 1/4 tank, the cycle starts all over again. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!

Estopped up breath expell line check valve (goes out rub rail). As the gas level goes down, more unrelieved pressure in tank overcomes the carb needle valve lever spring and gas leaks into the lower case. The over rich mixture causes a hard start condition after engine shut down. :)
