can anyone tell me why my 94 sp (which always started and ran excellent) will not start or run in the water? I started it up after putting batteries in it and actually started it several different days, and it always starts up very quickly and runs great on the trailer. last season, the last time I put it in the water it started but was very bogged down and wouldnt go much over an idle. got it on the trailer and it started. this year, starts excellent on trailer and wouldnt even start in the water. it barely even sputtered at first then after cranking several times, no sputtering, just cranked over well. Got it on the trailer and it took a bit but it sputtered and slowly cleaned itself out and runs and starts excellent again everytime i start it again. any thoughts?

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Your problem is not uncommon, since running on the trailer is essentially running the ski without a load.

The first thing we need to check is the compression, disconnect both spark plugs and ground the boots, check the compression with the throttle open. Let us know what the compression is in both cylinders. This will give us an idea of the general condition of the motor.

Do you have gray Tempo fuel lines? If you do... that can be your problem. Change all the hoses, and clean the carbs, and fuel select valve.

I believe they are gray. if it were to be the fuel lines, or a cleaning, does it make sense that it starts and runs good on the trailer?
Thanks,

Yep my gti did the same thing wouldnt get over 10mph on the water ,ran great on the trailler changed lines out rebuilt carbs runs a ton better still wont open all the way up but getting there

thanks much, i will try it when i find that "extra" time. lol. seems like it could be a bunch of different things and hard to logic the one that actually helps. anyway, thanks all for the advice, i'll get at it and let you know.

Absolutely. Without a load on the engine it only takes a tiny little drop of fuel to make it rev up.

When changing out your fuel lines...don't forget your fuel pick up lines in the tank...I just found mine all cracked and brittle it was running on the trailer but not in the water.....
