Since your carbs are tuned to a "Pop-off" pressure... you will go lean, and you could damage your engine. Not to mention, it will render your flame arrestor null. In the USA, the fine isn't worth it if you get caught.
A final word... the air box can flow more air than a stock engine can take in.
With that said... the screen in the flame arrestor does get clogged from dust, and fuel spit back. If it's been more than a year or two... you can clean it to help air flow. Just take out the mesh... hose it off with hot water, and a good degreaser, and rinse clean. It's a stainless steel mesh, so you really can't hurt it. Just don't drop anything down the carb while you have it apart. I recommend putting a couple paper towels in the carb(s) after you get it off.
