Running on reserve

Well this is a confusing one! I have a 95 GTX that would run great for 10 secs then bog out, not stall just bog out. So rebuilt both carbs, new fuel filter and lines. Went back in the water, and did the same damn thing. Went for a chance and switched the fuel selector for "gas" to "reserve" and it ran like a whole new machine!!!!

Question: What would cause this?

Question: what's the downside form running on reserve except I won't have a reserve if needed

Thank You

Fuel valve is probably clogged or the pick up unside the fuel baffle is clogged. Perhaps you didnt plumb something back correctly, not likely since it runs. You have basicly done all other fuel related items, or you didnt get something right in the carbs or filter. You can bypass the fuel valve to test that, you can bypass the filter to test that, and you can switch the lines on the baffle and see if the problem follows the "on" line. If it is the valve you are better off replacing it because theyre cheap and nearly impossible to clean.

Very common for the selector to fail. Seals fail and it sucks air and or the green goo from the lines causes it.

Simply replace it.

It's also possible that your "normal" tube has a crack or hole in it and is sucking in lots of air.....where as the "reserve" tube does not.

Experts, it that possible???

Possible not likely tho. He mentioned cleaning carbs and replacing fuel lines. Didn't do the fuel selector. They always get clogged. That's the #1 most likely culprit

i agree with everyone saying replace the selector. i tried to cheap out on my xp and it ended up starting to suck air later on.
