The rub rail insert. (rubber part) got knocked out of the rub rail. How do I get the rubber insert back in? I have tried using a screwdriver to get the edge in and also a hammer and a small 2X4 to pound it in. Whats the best way. It is cool outside so that doesn't help the rubber bend either.

Just a thought, but see if rubbing a little Vaseline or grease on the section that popped out. Should aid in popping it back in with a hammer.

Not sure which model you have - update your profile :)

Rub rail inserts are best served warm and with a bunch of patience. Don't fight a cold rub rail - it will win.
It is best to let them get really warm in the sun and then work on them. I have placed them in hot water before inserting and did use a hair dryer once too.
I find it best to use a gasket scraper which is about 1" wide and rigid like a screw driver. Don't get me wrong you can use a screw drive just fine.
I angle the bottom lip in the rub rail and use the gasket scraper to force the top lip in for about a foot or so. Then I take my plastic faced ball peen hammer and pound it home. Repeat until you are done.
Hope this helps.

CE,
I would agree that it will aid in popping it back in, BUT it also aids in it popping out. I would not recommend this.

Thanks guys. When I get it back from the shop (getting the carbs gone through) I will work on the rub rail.

rub rail final solution

Mine kept popping out because I kept it sitting tied to the dock. I got tired of sticking the rubber back in and went around the whole perimeter with small pan head sheet metal screws about every 6 inches. That was the end of that problem. PS: I am convinvinced that Seadoos are made by the Devil. Ever notice how many trouble threads are posted here?

The soapy water abd a 1" putty knife is the easiest and fastest way to get the rub rail back in. Buddy at the body shop had it all back in in less then 15 mins.
He also custom makes vinly numbers letters and decals. Will post up some pics of the ones he cut for me.
Same font as the factory stripes and same color as the interior. Both sides for $30.

Hydro, you need to add you seadoo model and year to you avatar. Use mine as an example.
You don't need any tools to insert the rub rail...Use a hair dryer to heat up the rub rail, then just apply the top lip in the groove and heat and work your way to the rear of the hull till it's all the way in. On the rear of the Jet boat...is a connector piece. If you want remove it and insert the rub rail under it and re screw it down grabbing the rub rail with the screw.

Thanks Karl but the rub rail was just out in a small area. Heat gun was an idea but the putty knife was simple and quick.

What about the silicone?

Do you reapply the silicone afterward? How effective is the silicone. In some area of my boat, the silicone is coming off the rub rail...Should I reapply and do I use the same stuff around the bathtub...or is there a special silicone???

Any silicone used on the rub rail is to keep water from getting behind the rub rail channel, that the rubber rail goes into... Not on the center rubber rail itself.

Karl

Sorry...not the rub rail itself.

I was referring to underneath the rub rail. Between it and the boat...:willy_nilly:

Oh...yes pure silicone is best. The marine stuff is the same as you can get in hardware stores. Get the good stuff.

Anyone have suggestions on getting the riveted rub rail base off to silicone behind it? I assume those things are rivets.....and then re-installing?

As far as snapping the rub rail back in place, I've found that if you set the top groove in place first and press/hold upwards on it, the bottom groove clears the snap rail fairly easily with a little inward pressure. No tools needed.
