Is it possible to replace the Bendix on a 787 starter? Mine broke. I have a donor starter with bad copper strips on the armature, but am not sure if the Bendix can be replaced.

I figured out how to get the old one off. Just a REALLY PIA snap-ring. I should be able to clean stuff up and get it working.

You can also order rebuild kits that replace the brushes and brush holders for the one with the detached copper braid.

Yes, you can replace the bendix. Get the old snap ring off, in one piece if possible. And the bendix and gear will slide right off. They sell new bendix units also. The snap ring is the hardest part. I used a pair of vise grips to hold half the ring in place and a small screwdriver to open the other half. Try not to stab yourself.

I got it off. That is exactly how I got that snap ring off. It was a BIATCH! And yes, I stabbed myself....
