Removing rotary shaft

Hi- I'm in the process of rebuilding my 1995 xp motor. I split the case, put a reman crank in, and sealed it. At the time, I did not visually see or feel anything when spinning the rotary shaft so it seemed OK. Now 2nd guessing myself thinking it's been 25 years in that motor and do the right thing and replace it. I am reading on the forum that you can pull it without having to split the case.
So I removed the clip but seems like the shaft is really stuck.

I don't really want to split the case again if I don't have to. But I'm wondering if the brass rotary gear just slips out of the crank? or can the gear sometimes not disengage or get stuck.

Question is do I need to just continue to apply pressure and it will eventually pull out?

Thanks for your feedback.

OK there are references here on the forum saying it is possible to remove the shaft even while the motor is still in place / not split.

But manual(s) are clear that the case has to be split both during removal and reinsertion.

I've invested this much time and money to get to this point in the rebuild so....following the shop manual's recommendation and splitting the case (again).

Yes.

It's tough to stomach, but do it right and split things again. Do not cut corners on a full rebuild.

The rv shaft gear is brass and if a tooth becomes dented/bent then it can wear itself apart and fail. If you don't split the cases you take more of a chance of damaging the gear sliding it in/out.

When you set the case halves together gently spin the rv shaft cw/ccw as you set the cases together. This makes sure the gears mesh before you put any pressure on the halves. I just set the cases together once and pushed them together, mushed a brass tooth and had the gear fail on the test drive.

Just my 2 cents worth,,,after I rebuild a motor,,,and have to retime the rv,,,the cases are already together,,,I use the puller to pull it,,,and of course reinsert it,,,and repeat till I get it right,,,so,,,he does not have to split the cases,,.but will need the puller.
