Removing PTO?

Hello all,

I've done a few searches and come up with little info on this.

Basically I need to remove the PTO and replace it. It this possible with the motor still in the ski? My understanding is you need to turn it counter clockwise to remove it? How do you hold the motor from turning however?

Last year the rubber stopper disintegrated and the driveshaft moved forward. The smaller amount of splines wore away. I asked if the PTO was "hardened" but got no response. I replaced the driveshaft and it seemed ok. However 10 minutes out on the water this past weekend and it spun again.

Thanks for any insight you guys can provide, this is on my 2000 GTI.

Take out the rear spark plug and feed rope down the jug until the piston can not move. Then use a pipe wrench on the pto and take it off.

+1 to that. They guy who removed mine had it off in about 15 seconds using a pipe wrench. It was way easier than I thought it would be. And yes, it can be done with the motor in the hull.

Are you sure that the driveshaft is engaging fully into the PTO? I saw one the other day that had the splines shredded off, but it looked as though it was barely engaged into the PTO. I'm not sure if the motor will move front to back or not, or if there would be a reason that the shaft wasn't all the way in the PTO, I'm still new to this too. lol

Hi Guys. Thanks for the reply. I did find another post that someone was worried about causing a flat spot in the bearings by doing this? Anyhow originally the boot holding the grease in came apart and then the grease flew out. with is dry apparently it rubbed the rubber bump to nothing and then only had a maybe 3/8" of splines that were holding it and they wore out. So, I replaced the drive shaft, bumper and boot and greased it. But apparently the PTO isn't hardened and I've probably killed another Axle. So got to get the PTO off to at least replace it and i'll check the splines on my replacement axle.

Thanks again for your input!
