Again Im "stuck" on my top end rebuild.

Got the exhaust tuned pipe off the exhaust header, removed the head and studs, bracket holding the tuned pipe to the cylinder casting. I did not remove the exhaust header itself.

Still jugs wont budge even pounding with a 2 by 4.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

Did you take the cyl bolts out?

What you you mean by "I did not remove the exhaust header?" Do you mean the manifold? If so... you should remove it.

I did remove the 8 long studs with o -rings that go through the cylinder casting if thats what you mean. I was hoping to remove the cylinders without the exhaust manifold in place. No can do?

Thanks for your help.

Definitely not seized, can turn the pto with vice grips and watch the cylinders move.
The rear piston has a hole in it btw, thats why im doing this in the first place.

The cylinder wall actually looks amazingly good considering. A patch of scuffing at the very bottom, one or two pits, but no scoring. I think it will clean up.

This is the bad cylinder The head has 2 dings at 10 oclock and 4 oclock where a piece of ring got squished.

Should these be ground smooth ?

Well.... it should come off. I'm going to say... a little corrosion, and the base gasket are holding it.

Since you still have the manifold on... try to lift up. (in the direction of the cyl's) Don't push sideways.

Yea, just grind it smooth. Don't over do it. The cylinders should come off if the studs are out. Spray some penetrating lube down the stud holes and let it sit overnite. I thought maybe a piston was seized and holding them on.....not so. I would leave the exhaust manifold on so you have a place to pry and beat. Gently.

Sorry Doc.....typing at the same time again.

Thanks will try the penetratig oil. no more working on it tonight, am exhausted from beating on it.

Too late with the exhaust manifold tho, its off. Figured I need to take it off to get a better look at those carbs at some point. Somehow the one leaned out enough to blowtorch the cylinder. Funny thing was , the plug looked normal. not all melted and burnt. oh well.
Tomorrow is another day.

When the repair manual suggests beating on it with a plastic tipped hammer you know its going to be a beach.

Ok crazy idea, am considering jacking up the boat and trailer, attaching a strap to the cylinder casting and using the weight of the boat to pull it off.:banghead:

This is crazy. This thing is welded on I swear.
What about putting the head on and cranking it to push it off with compression?

I know you've gone over this but lay out all your jug bolts and count them. I'm not sure how many exactly there are for that motor but Doc will.
