I've got a stripped rotary gear and I've been told I might be able to replace the brass gear without tearing the engine down. I've got the clip from around the gear but the shaft doesn't seem to want to pull out. Can I pull this shaft and replace the gear, and if so how? Ski is a 96 XP, motor is 787.

Its in the Service Manual with pictoral direction. I am suggesting you get one.
It has answers to this and is a MUST HAVE.

with the gear stripped, your better off replacing the entire assy. It does not take much..(.003) out of "true" to destroy another gear.

Also, look at the drive gear on the crankshaft to make sure it hasn't shifted to one side. If it has shifted you'll have to pull the crank and have the gear recentered or you'll keep tearing up the brass gear.

How do you recenter the drive gear? I have this exact issue with the drive gear being shifted off center and pressured aganst the seal. Also has broken the spring around the seal due to the pressure.
