717 ROTARY VAVLE SHAFT MOVEMENT

2000 GS 717. I notice when I put my motor back together that there is some play in the rotary valve gear compared to the crank shaft. I can turn the rotary gear back and forth a little without the shaft moving. Does this mean the rotary valve shaft needs to be replaced and also can I do this with the lower half of the motor still together? Just wondering if I can pull the rotary shaft out when I remove the rotary disc cover. Will this cause the engine to loose timing?

How hard is it to replace the brass gear once the rotary valve shaft is out

Cases have to be split to change the rotary shaft. There shouldn't be much play at all.
