My meters are the cheap ones. I have a good one at the cottage I'll run a few more checks on the week-end. I never got to pull the red wire! We were just happy the thing let go where it did. One hour later and we'd have been in deep!!!! Towing is a slow ordeal......

He means to pull the rectifier wire on the good ski to see if your RPMs increase.

Ya I got that! I was going to pull the red wire off once I ran it for a while. Just didn't get to it. Wanted to make sure first that the stuff I already did wasn't effective. its hard to know what the problem is if you change too many things.

the battery on my lawn tractor wasn't charging and I put a cheap Harbor freight meter on it and it showed exactly 24V AC on the non-running tractor as well. Put the meter on a couple batteries sitting on the shelf and if registered 24V AC on those as well. It does seem to be accurate for DC though. I have another HF meter that I got for free with a coupon a couple weeks ago. it measures 4V AC on a 110V wall outlet. Obviously, everything at HF isn't the high quality we think it is. :)
