Rave valve/engine temps 787

Hi all

So just this season i put on an oil shut off going to the lower end due to the crank seals getting leaky... so im in the engine bay turning it on and off everytime i go out...

So today i decided to take a look around feel everything up make sure everything was tight and proper. So this was after about 20 mins of hard riding...

Heads felt good warm not hot to the touch, same with the entire exhaust set up... then i touched the rave valves and WOW! I mean they were seriously hot to the touch i was surprised the plastic didnt melt!!!

So my question is (btw the ski runs fantastic, did a top end rebuild 2 years ago.) How hot are these valves suppose to run? And if there not suppose to be hot to the touch what could be causing that?

When was the last RAVE maintenance done? There going to get hot as they are exhaust port valves. I have seen them hot enough to melt the plastic cap that the bellows attach too if the o-rings are missing/leaking or the housing and/or the valve stem is worn enough to let gases by. It doesn't take 30 minutes to disassemble and inspect. If yours is getting that hot, it is definitely worth inspecting/cleaning.

The raves were shaved/honed in the rebuild process and thats just about it. Whats the process for like regular maintence ?

Mostly cleaning and inspecting bellows o-rings. However, the housing and guillotine stem can become worn. The housing will often wear in an oval shape. If there is much space between the housing and stem, it will let gases by and leak oil and get hot.

Now that i look at it actually it does seem like there is an accumulation of oil blotches right around the raves. How do i fix this? Do i need to buy whole new setups?

Do you mean outside the RAVEs on the outside the engine? If so, yeah inspect everything and order what you need. Remember of course, if you get new guillotines they will have to be Re-shaved. When mine last done that, I ordered new guillotines, housings, O-rings, Springs and bellows.

RAVE valves should be cleaned at least once every year from what I have gathered. I did mine 2 weeks ago, it's not a complicated job. There are some good threads showing how to do it.

I thought the same thing as well.. the only thing is, to service them like said^ wouldnt you have to take the RAVES out? And that requires taking off the exhaust manifold no? I just dont want to be taking that whole thing on and off all the time. Unless thats whats nescesary? Lmk thanks

No. You remove the clip which let's you lift the black cover off. Then you unscrew the plastic nut. Then unbolt the RAVE housing and lift it off. If the guillotine doesn't come out with the housing lift it out. Clean it all up, and reassemble.
