I was just wondering what are the main sources of compression loss.

The most obvious to me would seem like a loss of lubrication, but I am curious if there are other things within my control that I can do (or avoid doing) to extend the longevity of the engine.

Sincerely

Yes, lack of oil will kill a motor quickly. Also using the correct oil too is important.
Also air leaks could make a lean burn which is bad too.

RE: loss of comp could be due to bad or loss of rings, hole in piston, etc.
The members here with more knowledge of the Merc engines will answer shortly.

Oil is the biggest.

Lack of and wrong/poor quality oil.

Overheats can also affect it but oil is the most important thing you need to do to an engine.
