Was about 100 feet close to the doc where I was about to put the ski on the trailer and the steering cable broke at the jet end. So nonetheless, I was doing U-turns for a couple of mins LOL. So my question is - Do i need to get a whole cable? Or can i get the ball joint part because that's where it broke. Right at the end where it connects to the part that dictates direction on the jet. It looks like i may need to replace the whole cable because I tried loosening that part at the end of the cable and it seems to twist the whole cable.

depending on how much "material" is left on the cable, you can "tap it" with new threads and re-thread on the heim...

If you were replaceing the cable, you would need to remove the hiem ball connector
joint anyway to pull the cable into the compartment thru the hull hole after you had loosened the inside nut, and pulled back the outside stainless retainer ring that holds on the estoppel plastic split nut. I say all this even if you have good threads
so you can get the cable out for a good greaseing and freeing it up. Bill

Ok i've been trying for the life of me to take off the hiem ball connector and have been unsuccessful. It seems to be stuck on the cable/threads. I can't seem to isolate the cable and get the hiem to turn without the entire cable turning as well. Any suggestions on how to remove that sucker by chance? It appears that there may be enough thread left that if i just bought the hiem ball connecter (not sure if they even sell those separately) that I can fix it.

First you have to loosen the small nut next to the long nut, that locks it on threaded shaft. Then where the blue cable and the stainless crimp nut that affixes it on the compartment side, have someone hold the visegrip or wrench on that stainless part from turning and you put a wrench on the long hiem nut, and left to loose, long nut should unscrew from the threaded shaft. Thanks Bill. I'm gonna give it a shot and see if I can break that sucker loose. It looks like there's enough thread left that it's salvagable to keep the cable and get a new nut. Sounds like you are telling me that I need someone to secure it from the inside of the hull while i try to unscrew it. Looks like i may have to take a lot of the rear directional assembly apart in order to get good leverage on it from the back end.

use a channel lock, grip ahold of the shaft..(the actual cable), then break heim loose..

Thanks for the info guys I really appreciate all the help and advice! It's so crazy how that little bolt/nut can completely make the steering inoperable!

Ok guys....thanks for all of your input and advice because i was able to get the ball joint off the end of the steering cable. I had NO idea that there was a bolt on the inside of it securing it from turning any further until you guys had mentioned it in this thread. So check this out....for shits and giggles, i went to the seadoo stealership and got a price qoute on that ball joint part. Gues how much they wanted??? $50 fricken bucks for that bolt!!!! What the hell???? They are on crack. I bought a new one from a local shop here that specialized in jet ski salvage parts etc.. for $25 bucks. Same part # and everything! Thanks again guys and ride on!!!
