Question on Stator

A Little advise please.
I own 2 Sea Doo's both 2000 year models and both GTX DI's I have lost the charging system in one of them and have narrowed the problem down to the Stator "I think". Can any one tell me if it is necessary to remove the engine in this year and model Sea Doo to repair the Stator?

Nope

I have a '98 GTX LTD, and 02 XP I did the stator on the XP without much hassle... or even removing the exhaust...

however on the GTX you will have to remove the exhaust pipe to get in there

but no, u shouldn't have to remove the engine by any means...

Repairing the stator is easy if one on the windings on a post is blown through. The stator is basically three wires ( joined at whats called the star point ) which is under the small bit of fiber looking tube. Each wire ( called winding ) is wound around every third post on your stator, aproximately 30-35 times. Its therefore a three phase generator.

I had a blow in one of my posts due to a bolt from the balance shaft coming loose and getting flung into the winding.

I simply unwound that post, joined the circuit, wound around 35 times and connected back into the circuit. this was for a 96 787 stator, yours might be different. If you decide to give it a go, remember to count the 'turns' ( number of times the copper wire is wound around the post)

However, be careful not to scratch the varnish of the copper wire, this is like the insulation and makes any energy in the circuit follow the wire instead of jumping accross it where it overlaps. Also use arildite, or a resin to stop vibration rubbing the wires togeather, ( i forgot to resin mine, so im going to rewind from scratch)

You should be able to get the copper wire from and electric motor rewinder, I use 1.0mm, as there are a couple of different gauges of wire.

Ill post pictures of mine when Ive rewound it.

Was just reading through the forum and came across your post on rewinding your stator.. how did you get on with it?

I am trying to diagnose why mine isn't charging, pulled the front cover off last night and noticed some not good water stuff inside.. the starter motor isnt sealing and has allowed water inside the front cover..

I'm guessing the stator will be fried.. going by some pics of bad stators mine has a very slight browning to the windings but no where near as severe as others show..

Very interested to hear how you get on with rewinding yours.

Have just noticed you are in CHCH.. I used to live in Avonhead but am currently living in Auckland now.

I looked around and the stator looks the same as used in many motorcycles (XR600 etc ). So if you get stuck and auto sparkie should be able to give you some pointers,

It was pretty easy, stripping the wire is the hard part. When youve got it stripped back to the iron core, you need to make sure there is an insulating layer before you start rewinding. I used electrical tape where the base layer of resin came away when stripping the wire. I used1mm transformer wire ( I bought three 14m rolls from Jaycar electronics, the bobbin made handling easy ), cost about $11 each.

If you search for stator winding images on google, you will see how to do it. Every third pole makes up one winding. Each post takes about 10 min to wind by hand I counted about 35 turns on each post( you have to do this 18 times, so dont hurry), be careful not to scratch the coating of the wire, and dont hurry.You need to wind as tightly as possible, as the first and second circuits are easy, the last one is difficult as your starting to run out of room.

After you wind each post, stop and use an ohms meter to test if youve got an accidental short to ground.

Once youve wound it, you need to encase in resin, so the wires dont rub each other and short out. I used plasticast ( 2 part resin), from an electrical wholesaler,( ive been told i could have used RTV ) you need to let it go off a bit as its hard to work with when its like water, but good for getting in to all the gaps.

NOTE, make sure you leave enough room where the three retaining nuts go, there need to be able to be tightened without catching the winding wire,
