Pre-mix......

Is it possible to do away with the oil pump and just pre-mix your own gas? Is this advisable and how many have done it?

yes it is do able. i dont have a ski but i run all my snowmobiles on premix. oil pumps eventualy wear out and end up making you burn twice as much oil as you should. depending on your model, but most you have to block off the oil pump shaft and plug the lines then mount some kind of a resivoir bottle to keep oil in so that your rotary shaft gear stays lubricated.

if you do it, get yourself a ratio rite bottle. they make it very easy to fill up at the pump if you have to.

You really just need an oil injection block-off plate. They are cheap and easy to install. I didn't see what type seadoo you have (update your profile ), but here are the links to get one:

Sorry, I did a serch first and I guess I must hav eused the wrong search words, as I did not find anything that really talked about it. Maybe a FAQ page with links to threads that discuss commonly asked questions? Just a thought.


So I will just need one of those kits for each engine? It looks like it includes plugs for the oil lines.

on yuor SK model..? Remove the intake manifold, then seperate IT, from the rv cover, you'll see a white gear in there, what turns/produces the oil pump to work, then re-install everything, and install pump block kit and/or just leave yuor oil pump on there. Go to hardware store, and get 2-little caps to cap off the brass fittings on the intake manifold, and 1 big cap to cap off the feed line from the oil tank.

Sometimes what happens in a boat transfer is so much exictement the type of oil is overlooked entirely and mixing 2stroke oil is a big gamble - many times it forms a gel that the pump can no longer spray inside the motor either blocked nozzles or the small oil lines get plugged with the gel product - it is like when you smear jelly on the outside of the jar, flush it all with kerosene to restore the pumping action and then choose and stay with oil from a reputable supplier, when you run your first bottle empty cut off the front and leave it in the glove box so you can always get the same type.

You're better off keeping the oil injection, the oil pumps rarely fair, either the fuel system gets clogged up or the small injector oil lines break, either causing engine damage..

You should inspect and replace the small oil injector lines and check all the lines and rebuild the carbs since your boat is 10 years old.

You can do premix, I've done it, but switched back:

Uses more oil(more $$$) smokes more and is messy..

Common failures on engines include lack-of-lubrication seizures due to failed oil pumps, breaks in lines, leaks, etc. Running a pre-mix oil/gasoline mixture solves this problem."

I'm not stopping you, but the pump rarely fairs, it's the small oil lines that become brittle and break, all this stuff should be checked during your regular maintenance. A site with more information is pwctoday, do a search and look for posts by bill oneal, he's the master..

Buy the block off kit, premix, and you'll need to keep the oil tank full to lubricate the rotary valve gear.
