hey guys just a quick question! im quite the newb with my new 97 speedster and the past few nights iv noticed the right engine starter will turn over no problem for as along as needed, but the left will kick for like 2 seconds then make a winding noise (kinda what it sounds like) and cut out.....and then after doing this 3 or 4 times it will finally go long enough to fire up the engine! is this just a sign of the starter going?

thanks in advance!

Solenoid or starter. You can swap from other engine to determine which one it is.
Good luck

yea i no were and what it is.....just wondering with what i described if it is the starter on its way! and if i buy a new one it should solve my problem right?

No. it could be the solenoid, or a bad cable, or just dirty connections. It may be the starter... but there are other parts in the starting system, and it doesn't sound like you checked them, as other people have suggested.

It is what sends the power from the battery to the starter. When you push the start button it sends power to the solenoid, which then sends electric current to the starter. Think of the solenoid as having a wire through it and it has a gap in it, when the solenoid is triggered by the switch, it closes that gap. The juice required to crank is too much to send from the switch to the starter.

To find it, follow your positive battery cable.

you have a bad starter drive gear (gear on end of starter) new starter will fix it . it is a one way gear and free spins other way when paws inside gear go bad it free spins both ways causing the wing sound you are hearing.
