Popoff was very high when cleaning carbs

The proper settings for my popoff is listed as 36-40 psi

I redid my carbs with Mikuni kits... and as i was disassembling them, i noticed that my boat had a prior popoff of higher than 45-50 psi. The carbs (and filters) were completely spotless.

So do you think that the previous owner redid the carbs and used new springs without testing popoff first? Or could a 14 year old boat have spotless carbs and filters?

When i put them back together, i used the springs from the Mikuni kit, but cut them bit by bit until they registered a 36 to 40 psi popoff

Also i should note... one of the reasons i went through the carbs is because when the boat would be at full throttle, it would hang at 5000 RPM on one of both engines and wouldnt spring to 7000 RPM... could this be because of the higher incorrect popoff?

a mess

remove the "cut" spring/s. Install the oem ones. You'll have a mess on your hands.

Was the "paint" missing, from around the panhead screws on the carb/s? If not, then those carbs were not gone thru.

Being a 97', did you order the new 67.5 pilot jet, along with the new/upgraded raves..slotted ones? Have you verified that the "setting" ofthe excell pump, is working correctly..(view good motors' carb pump/rebound)? If not, adjust the little angled phillips screw, outword/inword

I ordered the new 67.5 pilot jets and installed them while i was rebuilding the carbs. I did not order the slotted raves, but i did clean the old ones and let out the red knob until its flush with the black cap, as someone on here suggested

The carbs did not have any paint missing, they looked like they werent touched. I wasn't sure if a boat that old could have perfect condition filters in the carbs, so thats why i wondered if maybe someone went through them

As for the springs... the manual i read for cleaning carbs said to cut them until the proper popoff is reached... you dont think thats a good idea? the carbs all register 36-40 psi popoff right now with the cut springs. Before i touched them, they registered 45-50 psi, which is a lot higher than recommended. I don't have the original ones anymore (if i cut a new spring too much then i would use an original and cut that one down)... so if you think i shouldnt use the ones i have in there now, then i should probably order new ones....

not a good idea.

Its ok to order the rebuild kits, use the new needle and diaphram, along witht he big o-rings, and lil ones for the hsa/lsa screws, BUT DO NOT use the springs, unless you install aftermarket filters, theres no need for the springs.

Re-install original ones, dont bend/lift on "tang", leave it alone, and re-install carbs.
