I've been looking at the do it yourself popoff test threads like this http://www.seadooforum.com/showthre...your-own-Pop-Off-Tester-with-Parts-from-Lowes

What is the importance of the valve on these vs this valveless one? http://osdparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_free_shipping_info&cPath=1&products_id=60

Then I begin wondering what is being used for air pressure? looks like maybe compressor tank? Is that a bit of overkill?

As I look at them and wonder about the air pressure supply I can't help but ask...wouldn't a decent hand pump with incorporated pressure gauge do about the same trick?

Thanks for addressing my meanderings.

Using a compressor is overkill, but also makes life a lot easier when you can just dial up some pressure and watch the guage rather than trying to pump up a hand pump. I actually purchased the exact osd one you listed and it worked fine. I actually just used a sports ball pump to test the carbs.

The only thing I would highly suggest if you tried to build your own and hook it to a compressor. I would put a restrictor in the line with a very small orifice so you would limit the possibility of flowing to high a volume of air into the carb and damaging things.

The actual Mikuni tool is a hand pump.

No... I don't think a compressor is over kill in a shop setting. I have air run in my shop... and I just hook to a regulator, and start adding pressure until it pops.

In a home shop... if you don't have a compressor set up, and ready to go... it's more of a pain than it's worth. In that case... a hand pump is quicker.

I probably misspoke, by overkill I guess I meant they pump huge volumes of air. seemed like it would be really tough to control it down to the minute volume needed to pop the valve. May just be my limited use/knowledge of my air compressor though. I mean I can set it to 30 psi but it would reach taht 30 psi SO fast in my mind...maybe that is why the ball valve, to really step down the volume?

Thanks for the responses
