hey guys i took my hood off my 96 xp today and removed the guages and cleaned it up the best i could i tried a few things like bleach and even a high pressure steam cleaner we have at work and nothing, this thing is staying faded chalky yellow haha, so i took some i got some acetone and i am going to clean it really good and paint it, ive read alot of people using krylon fusion which bonds to plastic really good, has anyone else tried this and did you use a clear coat too?

another question i have is that my vts and my speedo dont work so i am not even going to full with them, but is there a way i can black off those spots or do i have to leave them in there as duds?

Hi Brandon,

I painted the hood on my XP, just till I could do something better, but it turned out to look really good. I just cleaned it real well, I used purple power and a scotch brite, wiped it down with paint thinner. I used Rustoleum farm implement yellow aerosol, the color matches perfect. That might be all that I need to do, really looks good. I would send a picture but the XP is at the lake, I'll get a pic. this weekend and send it to you.

Lou

okay cool i think i am wanting to go with black i may leave the center piece yellow tho, but i just got it really good with some brillo pads and it actudally tuned out pretty good now i am undecided if i want to paint it or not lol

it still has a few white chalky areas but actually brightned up pretty good

here are a few pics what do you guys think paint it all black? paint the main part black and leave the little piece yellow or paint little peice black and leave rest alone?

Hi Brandon,

Looks great, what did you use for covers for the dead gauges? My VTR doesn't work either, but the speedo does, I might take the vtr gauge out and block the hole in the middle.

If you haven't already done it you need to order a couple of X4 cult decals from Dr Honda, it'll cover up the blemish on the lower hood.

Lou

P.S. What did you decide on the GTI?

I just ears the gauges Haha stuffed em up a bit so paint would stick. I just cut the wires off and painted them. And put back on. The hood looks brand new now. But I do need to order those decals for back of hull. Or right in front of the hoods. I'm getting those blacktip handlebar covers and seat covers and traction matts for both skis cosmetically they will look great just hope they last me a while.

had a chance to do the other ski today, it came out pretty good. the hood did not clean up as well as the first one but it did pretty darn good so ima leave it as is for a while just waiting on my handlebar covers and seat covers to come in and i think they will be looking good. guna wax them up as well

I painted the hood on my boat. It's basically an Sp hood. It was originally light purple, and it was ugly and faded.

I used an adhesion promoter, a few coats of plastic primer, a coat of gray color, a coat of silver, and a final coat of semi-gloss.

Looks great Dr. I would of liked to get a paint gun and do it like that but ill wait till off season. Ima paint entire ski lol..

after reading posts about painting the hood and feeling confident about krylon yellow. been to 4 different shops in my area and looked for a krylon plastic yellow paint finally found one. Under artificial light the color looks like it would be perfect. once on the ski way different then a 96 xp yellow. So to save some people some time and disapointment better off trying to get an auto shop match for plastic or going as light a yellow plastic paint as possible doesnt matter who makes it. krylon yellow plastic is at least 3 shades darker and now i have to sand and do it again.

I got some Rustoleum "Farm Implement Yellow" at Lowes, I used it for touch up paint on my 96XP it's pretty much dead on. I would send a picture but the ski is at the lake.

Lou

k not sure where i would get that at around my area. Not to mention not sure what to do now that i have to go over a darker yellow with a lighter yellow. not sure how to make that work.
