I personally think the trailer looks awful, and I would like to paint it white! What are the proper steps to painting the trailer where it looks top notch, will last a good while and won't rust!

i dont kno much about trailers but i have been around the racing truck scene a long time and alot of people either powder coat there truck frames or POR 15 them .. and the por 15 is damnnn strong and also prevents blocks and stops rust

Don.t try to hard to get a good finish.Gal is designed to oxidise. That is the white powdery coating it gets after a few months from new.Anything put over the top of that, will eventually peel off, making it look worst.Every spot that a gal trailer has a drill put through it,will start to rust, because there is bare metal exposed.
There is hot oxidised caustic dips that gal parts go through before powdercoating, but it's not a longterm thing for Galv. trailers used in saltwater.
A good thing I have seen is sheathing the trailer in folded section of stainless or aluminium and using Sikaflex to put them onto the trailer. No drilling and it looks great..
(I have a powdercoating plant
Hope this helps

I sprayed a little patch just to see if I like the painted look and I do A LOT better!! But what I noticed is the galvanized paint?? Is very rough and looks like crap painted ( looks lumpy and like the paint ran )

I don't know if they still make this, but there use to be a paint called Galvagrip which was made specifically for this purpose.

Galvanizing it a hot dip process, more like a metal treatment than a paint. You're not going to get rid of the roughness. About all you can do is paint over it. If you want you could put an add on Craigs list, I'm sure someone would be glad to trade a painted trailer for a galvanized one.

I may just have to live with it unfortunately...but Back to the other question..would self etchin primer not work!?

The etch primer will work to get the paint adhesion. But not in the long term.It eventually will come off because of the oxidisation. This is all directly related to the age and condition of the trailer.the better it is now the better it will last.

FYI...
Self-Etching Primer

Dupli-Color® Self-Etching Primer etches and primes bare metal in one step, making it ideal to use as the first step in all automotive priming projects and for use on spot repairs. A high-quality formulation allows for maximum adhesion under all types of automotive finishes on plastics, fiberglass, bare steel, aluminum and stainless steel.

I painted my 20 year old Teal Eagle trailer last year and used this primer on the winch and wheel jack that used to be "brassy color" then I painted them jet black with Teal trailer and new bunks, steps and fender covers......Looks awesome.

So self etchin primer does work best before painting a galvanized trailer?? How's it holding up and how long has it been holding up?
