I thought I would start one thread and bump it when something comes up.

I purchased the sportster from 2nd owner on 7/16 that was downsizing and got it for $2800? I figured it was a good deal and if I had to throw 1-2 grand to fix I would be okay w/it seeing I got it for cheap so I think :leaving:

Since then I have spent every night working on maintence stuff and Sundays sea trial was less than impressive.
One motor would start and other wouldn't??

So far I invested the 50+ bucks for a carb rebuild kit which had a lot of extra gaskets left over.
I have a thread on it now but I'll ask/mention question here.
I followed this thread where in the first adobe file pic #8 there is a black rubber membrane that goes on side of where the small carb fuel filter is.
It looks like my model carb does not need that membrane per manual??
I used it anyways, but not sure if I should remove it(got manual after rebuild and installed carbs back :banghead:)??

I found a gas leak from fitting close to N/S.
I think a hose goes from that fitting to the fitting near chokes butterfly squitter??
Other carb had a hose capped where the other one was leaking....
So choke may not be operational if assumption correct about hose looping b/w those two fittings??

I would like someone to confirm please that I am indeed set up for premix.
PO said system was working but cable going to pump underneath carb is not connected. Gear still installed on inside of housing. not sure if there is supposed to be another gear on block side.
Still learning how the read diagrams from manual...
The in/out oil hoses at the block are still connected and so are the 2 tiny ones on ea side going to block.
There is a small hose that is connencted to the the top of oil tank that is pinched and not connected??
I checked the gas and the 35 gallons I just removed was NOT premixed

I put in new new plugs b/c last ones appeared fouled (black) despite not PO not premixing and non working oil pump??

Getting compression tester tomorrow.
I put my finger over sparkplug hole and get good suction and pressure against finger?? So I'm hoping I'm safe despite seeing some bubbles coming from bottom of cyl head :banghead:
Someone did a top end and gasket has black sealant everywhere and I dont think it was put on right b/c its sticking out??

The saga continues.

hello all ,

took it out today for test and once again I had starting issues w/starboard motor but when I got both running there was cavitation.

looked arouund and found the wear rings are about 60+ bucks not counting oil for the cone.
I then found mechanic would do job for 150 bucks so i figured my 5-8 hours to do it or just pay somone which I thought is fair.
I get call and say the whole pump has to be replaced  the condition of ring around housing was in to bad of condition to put new wear ring...

The propeller may also need to to be refinished or order a new one which is $$$? Hoping to get some insight on what replacement would cost??

hope next run is more productive :)

thats the purpose of the wear ring, to save the pump. He's seeing if you'll bite, and spit the dough. Go get boat, it'll take no more than an hour to replace both rings. Then, yourself can inspect the impellors.

The black gasket, from looks of it, isnt required, since the picture shows the fittings being on the carb, and not a pump style. Do you have an external fuel pump?

With the oil cable not hooked up, its your choice, you can hook ur up, and go premix, or leave the way it is, and premix. The 2-big oil lines going to/away from block, isthe rv assy oil lines, you need those. The one on the exhaust side, is the return from the assy, that shouldnt be blocked off. The one with the oil filter inline, you can cap that off, if you go premix. Then the lil oil lines from pump to manifold, remove those, and cap at fittings.

I agree, he is trying to scam you. That is a very easy job you could do yourself. You could buy 2 Wear rings and rebuilt impellers and the oil and tool needed for around $180 for everything and do it yourself in an hour or 2 tops. SBT sells refurbed impellers for $25 each, you send yours in and they send you a rebuilt one.

I know I could do it it's just time I don't have.
I have a busy schedule and when I come home I try to spend time with my sons.
If I start when they go to bed it's past 11 pm :willy_nilly:

I thought the 200 bucks I'm paying him was worth my 2-3 day late nighters. Thinking I would be in the water Sunday

With regards to pump which he says need replacing I'm sure it could be salvaged but WR is stuck in pieces to housing and it looks like it has to be scraped off  it's hard to describe what I saw?
I'm sure I could sell pumps on ebay/CL/ here..and make back a few bucks and have new pumps with all new internals :hurray:

Good to know about props :hurray: mine aren't so bad. But for 50 bucks I may pull the trigger and get them...
Are Theses are refurbished oem?
