Just bought a 97 XP with a 787 earlier this year and last week had a problem where it wouldn't crank over, just "clunk" repeatedly and every once in a while actually crank the engine for a second or two (while spitting water out the back). Replaced the starter and the battery and then discovered I had a water flooded engine. Took the plugs out and it cranks over fine and sprayed water out of the spark plug holes. I read in the manual that part of the procedure is to drain and refill the counterbalance reservoir with 1 oz 30 weight oil. I have looked and looked for the drain and fill caps, but can't find them anywhere (not really sure what I'm looking for either though). When I bought it the guy said he had rebuilt the engine, and I'm thinking that perhaps somewhere down the line the owner put a pre-97 787 in it and thus it doesn't have the drain and fill plugs for the counterbalance reservoir. What will happen if I don't do this step of the process?

First... Welcome.

Second... you obviously have a chilton manual... because that's the wrong oil. You use 1 oz of 2-stroke oil. (not 30wt)

Third... not all of the 800's have a plug you can get to. So, if you can't find it... yours may not have a fill plug that is easy to get to.

Is this something than can be done easily, or is it something when doing a rebuild? (From the diagram, looks like it's done during rebuild?)

It's not easy... but on some of the 800's, there is a fill plug that is on the side of the engine.

Thanks Dr. Honda. Mine has the 787 though not the 800, and the sea doo shop manual calls for SAE 30W...anybody know what will happen if I don't do this after water flooding? Can't do it easily since there is no plug...

C/B oil check

The 95-96 787's don't have plugs. Since yours is a 97 it should have them. You won't see them at first glance they are hidden. With no C/B oil you will cause major engine damage. It should be changed every 50 hours or whenever the engine is water flooded. There is a great article with pics at seadoosource.com/reservoircheck. I just changed the C/B oil as a maintenance item on my 787. I added 1 oz. of 30 wt motor oil per seadoo instructions. The drain plug is located on the left rear of the engine underneath near the mount. You will need a 5.5 or 6mm allen wrench socket ( can't remember) short extension and a ratchet. Use a rag to catch the oil coming out. Once drained be sure to put some sealer on the plug threads prior to installing. The fill plug is a plastic plug with a slot in it, You can feel it better than you can see it. It comes out easy with a long screwdriver. I used a medicine/cough syrup syringe to put the 1 oz. of oil back in it. Good Luck.

Thank you adamsbj123. I think I have determined that mine has had the original engine replaced with one from 95-96 as it does not have the drain and fill plugs. What should I do now?

If your engine is a 95-96 787 the only way to add C/B oil is through a small hole in the crankcase with the cylinders removed. The C/B oil is added when the engine is assembled and that is all she gets. The procedure to drain and fill the C/B oil when the engine is water flooded does not apply to your 95-96 787 engine without major disassembly. I think Seadoo realized this mistake quickly and added the drain and fill plugs on all later models. I would just run it!
