Good evening:

I was out working on my xp today and I noticed some oil on the bottom of the hull the inside I think it is leaking from the oil tank fitting where the 2 hoses come from the bottom but I think the vent on top is broken also as I see oil dripping from there when I shake the tank also maybe the tank might be cracked I am gonna investigate tomorrow the whole bottom of the oil tank is covered in oil even after I wipe it down and come back a few hours later it is covered again has anyone else had this problem if so what was your solution?

The lower grommet is a known issue. If you THINK it is leaking there, I can assure you that it is.

Good afternoon:

Thanks for the help and the link I just bought one of those grommets I do think it is leaking from there I just don't know why it wasn't leaking a few weeks ago but I also just put an engine in the ski as well so maybe it was all the moving around either way we will see hope this fixes it.

I would agree,, just all the moving around. It seems to be one of those parts that WILL leak, it is when, not if...

Also check this theory.....is the oil in the tank over the half way point...that is... over the seam that goes around the whole tank. My tank seams started to crack and leak oil, so check that too.

.....well, I went to upload a photo from my saved pics and when clicking on "manage attachments" nothing show up.

Good evening:

Now that you mention it I did top off the oil tank it had about a quarter tank in it and I refilled it and now it is leaking I didn't even think about it. Well I guess we will see what happens tomorrow I will be inspecting the tank all over.

Good morning:

Well I am thinking I am just going to replace the tank I don't see any fresh oil around the grommet but I do see it coming from the breather vent thing on top of the tank and the whole bottom is covered in oil even though I keep wiping it down I cant seem to pin point where the leak actually is. I am going to remove the tank clean the area really well replace the grommet and put the oil back in and see what happens. But just incase I would like some prices on an oil tank for a 97 xp please if anyone has one please let me know thanks.

I think the 97-04 tanks are seamless... am I wrong ?

you can visually verify that I think.

Also I think there is a way to do a leak test with air, i've never done it myself, my leak test consisted of using some purple power and a scrub brush to clean it up then just filling it with water and seeing if anything oozes out. .

Spim, my 97 tank was not seamless. You can air test it if you got some plugs and so forth and a mity vac or something.

Another way, kind of like you're talking about, partly fill w/ water and green (or your favorite color) cleaner and give it a good shake. The foam will come boiling out af any real leak :)

Should have said "cap it off and give it a good shake..."

maybe i'm wrong on the seams, or 97 is unique, mine were 951.

to the OP, oil leaks can be a major PITA sometimes to diagnose and inspected replacements might cost you $55ish retail, maybe 60 or (30 if somebody has one laying around)

you have to pull it anyway, so dump the contents into a jug, rinse & look it over, seams most definitely do fail, just at a less frequent pace than grommets.

I have a spare good tank that I am willing to part with. PM me if you're interested and we'll discuss a price.

If KrazyBob is talking about the 97 XP in his signature, then I believe it should be a one piece oil tank up in front.

Good evening:

Yes I am talking about the xp in my sig I am going to remove the tank first thing in the morning inspect clean and reinspect I am hoping it is the rubber grommet but who knows I just have luck like that. Another question I have is I just replaced my engine in this xp and I found a threaded plug at the back of the motor by the pto above the counter balance shaft do I need to put oil in there and if so what kind/weight also mind you the engine I put in the ski was a known good used one and no fluids were drained except for what was in the oil lines going to the bottom of the block. thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it!

Yes, the threaded plug is where you add oil for the CB shaft cavity. Manual calls for 1 oz SAE 30.

how do I know if it needs more oil? also how often does one have to put oil in there. Is there a way to check the oil and that SAE 30 is that regular oil or synthetic does it matter? sorry for all the questions I just don't want to replace another engine.

Ok so I figured out the oil was coming from the oil sensor on top of the tank. I over filled the tank I washed and cleaned the tank I am still waiting for my new grommet to come in the mail should be here tomorrow. I will replace and reinstall the tank and only put 3/4 gal of oil in the tank opposed to the whole gallon. Also the tank has a seam it goes around the tank from top to bottom not around the sides. Does anyone have and answer for the oil question above? I bought a quart of SAE 30 oil it is not 2 cycle but regular can I put this in the motor at the counter balance shaft or do I have to find some kind of 2 cycle oil?

97' XP 787cc?

Recommended to use: seadoo XPSII synthetic 2 cycle oil.

But your going to get a lot of responses on other brands of oil you can run.

You definitely cannot run SAE30....

Good afternoon:

I know I cant run SEA 30 in the oil tank but like I said before I found this plug at the back of the motor by the pto above the counter balance shaft. I was wondering if I have to put anything in there. It was said earlier I needed to put SEA 30 in there but I don't know how much and how to check the level there may still be some in there. I have just replaced the engine with a known good used one but the history of the donor is unknown. So I figured if I had to put oil in it I would because I don't want to have to replace another engine.

Nick has tanks also. Minnetonka4me
