(Sorry, just realized there is a seperate section for boats, maybe a mod can move this to the right section)

After unwinterizing the sportster (its a 95) this year I could not get it to start, I was cranking on it for a while and when I took the plugs out they were wet, so assuming some antifreeze got into the cylinder I took the plugs out and cranked the engine to get it out. Put the plugs back in and they were soaking wet again. Come to find out it was not antifreeze it was oil. But after I figured out it wasn't working because there was no gas (allways check that first LOL) I thought it was normal that there would be a bunch of oil building up in the cylinder. So after adding gas and starting it up oil started pouring out of the exhaust. So my question, could this be becuse I cranked it for a while, oil built up in the muffler, and when I started it up it all came out? or is too much oil getting into the engine in the first place, maybe becuase some computer is bad, or the injector is bad? Any input would be nice. Thanks in advance.

It's not a good thing... but it's normal on an older engine. The rotary valve shaft seals, or the center crankshaft seals are leaking. Chances are... once you get it cleared out, and run it... it will be fine until you park it for the winter again.

The only way to fix it is to split the case, and replace the seals. (requires a crank rebuild)

when you say "once you get it cleared out" do you mean fix it, as in take out the engine split the block and replace the seals. Or do you mean run it and it will eventually clear? And how hard is it to fix, I am "mechanically inclined," however I do not have a ton of special tools.

He means to get it started and run it enough to blow out that oil. You will be fine til this time next year, and have the same issue again.

Bring it to your local lake or where ever you ride and run it for a while. It make take a few runs on different days and your seal should seal back up. I have this same issue with my ski, when I dewinterize a descent amount of oil comes out of the exhaust but after the the first run it is fine.

just discovered my xp is doing this... its been sitting a total of almost a year between me and last owner.... would this contribute to hard starting or flooding of one cylinder with too much oil? i just rebuilt the carbs and changed fuel lines. compression is ok. not the highest but both sides are equal. ... So the seals will reseal by taking them and running them? it made a pretty good puddle out my exhaust in a very short time. thats quite a bit of oil being put into the water. :(

Well boys and girls, it is that time of year again. Time to "bug fog" the lakes and rivers.

Take an extra set of plugs with you to the lake and run your ski for about 5 to 10 minutes around the lake. You will look like a bug fogger, but it will not last more that a couple minutes. Come back to the dock and change the plugs...good to go for another season!!
