so i recently melted a piston as a result of detonation and i am working on rebuilding the top end

since i only bought the boat in may, this made me question the oil system (since i had everything torn apart anyways, i might as well make sure everything is good)

the guy who owned the boat before me said that he ran "seadoo oil" in it. i use the seadoo fully synthetic... but i added it before the oil in the tank (from him) ran out.

if he ran the blend, and i added the fully synthetic... would this cause it to gel or congeal like some people mentioned about blending brands? or would it be ok since they both were seadoo?

i'd prefer not to drain the 2 gallons of oil in the tank, but i will if its necessary to prevent another engine problem

No... if he ran the new syth blend... you can add either XP-S mineral, or full synth to it.

BUT.... if he was running the mineral oil, and you put the full synth on top of that... yes, you can have issues.

The easy way is to check the oil. Pop the hose off the bottom, and take a sample into a glass or clear container. If you see stringy stuff floating... drain it. Regardless, since you are rebuilding the engine... change the filters, change the small oil injection hoses, and make sure the check valves, and nipples are clear. Then, when you bleed the system... you will have a visual confirmation that the oil is pumping.

Oh... also, since you will have a new top end... you will want to run a tank of fuel at 50:1 mix to help with the break-in.

One last thought....

Since the boat is new to you... a quick check on the oil is the color. All the XPS oils are brown. The Mineral is close to a honey color, and the full synth is motor oil color. (much darker)

if you see any indication of blue, green or red... DRAIN IT!!! That's TC-w3 oil.

Thanks for the help again Honda! I will check the oil in a glass, and switch out the hoses/filter

I bought SBT's break in oil to mix with my tank.... is this okay? Or should i disregard it and run XPS mixed with the tank? I figured since i would be mixing the break in oil with gas and not mixing it with the XPS, then during operation it wouldnt have time to congeal or anything like that
