I was rebuilding the carbs on my 1996 GSX this weekend and when I was reinstalling them I was having a problem with the oil injection pump cable that runs from the back carb to what I think is the oil pump on the front of the engine. The cable was binding which was caused from it being frayed badly on oil pump end. It would engage the oil pump but when I released the throttle cable the oil pump would not return to its at rest position since the cable would bind in the cable housing. I had the engine rebuilt several years ago by an authorized dealer in Kingsland, TX and I am guessing that the cable has been like that since the rebuild. I was wondering how much damage may have occurred to the engine over the last two years due to the oil pump being stuck in the open position like it was. This jet ski has always been problematic, hard to start, and a little down on power compared to an almost identical 1996 GTX with the same engine and its never had a single problem other than needing a new wear ring on the prop. I think the main problem I found was the little card filters inside the fuel pump were very gummed up. I cleaned them and hope this gets rid of the top end surging issue I had over 4000--5000 rpm.
I am very curious just how the oil pump actually works when the throttle cable is engaged. Does is squirt oil only when it rotates or does it continue squirting if it is left open? Which I assume would then lead to too much oil in the carbs and fouling the spark plugs.
